I have a TA01NSN and am thinking about a dr. or trijicon red dot on top, what are my other options for a close-range optic in conjunction with the ACOG?

Remove ACOG, flip up your BUIS. Ready to go. Takes about 5 seconds.

Get the Trijicon RDS, JPoint or equivalent with the Trijicon wing mount.  Docter sights are expensive and less robust.

+1 on TRD or Jpoint with winged mount.

I tried that, didn't like how high it is. Most people don't like their optics mounted on the carry handle because it is too high. Well it's even higher up mounted on top of the ACOG.

Whatever you like is fine with me.

That LaRue mount is even taller than the one mounted on the eye piece.  It can mount JPoint, Docter or the T1, but it adds weight, bulk and height, why didn't they just make a compatible mount that has a piece of rail on top?

A lot don't like the piggyback setup.  I actually prefer it, but some like to use things like offset mounts, the MULRM, and some just ditch the combo altogether.  No problem, my was directed towards your advice to remove the whole primary optic in order to use the weapon for CQC, and that it only "takes about five seconds."  The reason for having a secondary CQC optic is reflexive fire, to engage close in targets quickly and effectively.  If you have to remove your primary optic and engage your back-up sights to use them, you've already missed the point.  Whether the miniature red dot is piggy backed or placed offset, the point is always that it's always and quickly accessible.  When a hostile target pops up right in front of you, they're not going to wait "about  five seconds" for you to remove your optic.

If that did happen I wouldn't need either sight.

Point...bang.

You could always go with an MRD mounted on a 1:00 or 11:00 offset mount.  That way you only have to cant the rifle 5 degrees to use the MRD and your cheek weld remains the same for both the ACOG and MRD.  This is what it looks like on my 6.8 SPC I use for 3-gun matches.  I used to have the MRD on top of the ACOG but I didn't like the whole "chin weld" thing either.

ETA: I am left handed so it is mounted on the left and right handers would be on the right.

Personally, I'm surprised at how much I like the chin weld in correlation with the RDS on the wingmount. I didn't think I would, but it's honestly one of the most natural and peripheral vision friendly systems I've dealt with (for me). I've got the ACOG on a Larue mount, so I figure three sight systems should be (or had better be) plenty...

Found this to work well for quick shots - 7.62x39mm, on 45 degree rail

Augee knows WTF he's talking about.

In my humble opinion, if you are to use a piggybacked Doctor/Jpoint/TRD, you should really get a saddle style stock too.  It really makes the 'chinweld' much more comfortable, natural and repeatable.

I run a TA01-ECOS.  I like being able to bring the rifle up from a 'heads up' position and have the red dot right there.  The con is that it might leave ur head up and exposed, if you're going in to harms way.  Further, depending on your zero, hold-over and hold under is necessary for precision shots (but COM shots are not a problem at all).

I had a RDS on a carry handle––pretty sure that the piggybacked Docter is lower.  Nonetheless, it is definitely higher than your standard aimpoint/flat-top mounted optic.  Never had a chance to run an offset mount yet.  So, YMMV.  Hope this helps.
