Just picked up some to try. Seems to have a 99 HS. Why is this called "dreaded?"

There have been reports of blown primers with the '99 stuff.

However, when I went to the range a few days ago I had zero problems with my '99 Adcom that I bought from surplusammo a couple of weeks ago.

I have 99 headstamp and have lost ~1 primer per box of 20. I haven't had the primers get lodged anywhere yet though. Luckily they just seem to be flying out with the rest of the case =) It isn't bad ammo, but I don't think I'll buy it again. There just isn't anything that great about it either.

Hmmmm. I had a bad experience with a blown primer that caused a major stoppage for me a little while back, so I hate to shoot any ammo that may be prone to it. Thing is, the price was attractive, four bucks a box at Gander Mountain. I bought just two boxes, but they had about 20 boxes on the shelf. If I got a good report here I was going to go back and clean them out. Just my luck theirs is the '99 headstamp. I should be able to shoot up those two boxes in a couple of days. I'll check all the fired brass. If the primers stay intact, maybe I'll get some more.

Thanks for the info.

what about the 98 headstamp?  Is that stuff better than the 99?

I had fired a 100 rds or so of the '99 stuff without a problem the past several months. Then, yesterday, out of 200 rds I had 3 blown primers. One jammed in the chamber preventing the following rd from completely chambering and two lodged in the lower preventing the trigger and safety from functioning.

Now I've got to pull out all my remaining '99 ammo for immediate disposal (read as shoot the shit up).

i had 500 rounds of 99 head stamp that ran through about 4 different barrels (white oak, wilson, and 2 bushy's) without any extraction problems. i think i found one or two with popped primers and quiet a few cases with some high pressure signs like flattened primers and some fairly prominent rings around the base.

the lot from 2004 that i bought has been perfect though.

At least 5 more popped primers today out of 4 20-rd mags resulting in 4 failures. One took me almost 10 minutes to clear.

I pulled all the 99 stuff and have 1200 rounds left. Emailed AIM looking for a comparable exchange for Guat.

I will no longer shoot '99 ADCOM ammo through my rifles.
