Yep, I was with 3/2 Lima. Never went to 29 Palms, I got to the unit right before they deployed in 04, and went to instruct MOUT/BUST right after we got back and then got out in sept 06. So somehow escaped CAX my whole Marine career, I hear 29 palms sucks anyways. 
We didnt get into the heavy fighting in Matador, we were up on the cliffs doing a blocking position, then came down and swept some fields, so we only got sniper fire/ mortar fire, nothing big. Now on Spear, ooooh boy, we tore that whole fucking town down by ourselves, Iraqis who talked to the follow up guys in our area said "it was like allah himself cast his wrath on the town"  You can see in the pictures what we did to that place.Were you in on any of those? |

I really didnt have a paticular pic in mind. I had seen many rifles painted so I was curious how this came about. I mean does the whole squad sit around and have a "Camo Party" once they land in Iraq? Are they degreasing the rifles and trying to do it right or is this just a lets GITRDONE so these things don't stick out so much? Either way they really match the environment over there. Pretty neat. I would imagine that from 100 yards there would be no way I could pic one of those out.

No, never made it to the sandbox... I use the Combat Diary on them now that I teach government. It is one of the best ways to put a "non political face on war." I do it so that their story can be told. I would love to be able to get one or two of yall in to talk to my seniors one day. I missed CAX too. You should see the tears I shed thinking about it. |

in the desert...yes the DCU pattern is more effective but you would be suprised at how much the acu pattern works with a concret backround at night..... you can barely see it at 100 or so meters away. |

Gotta' say, "you guys rock"..! Awesome thread... Thanks for your service...! I've seen a few vids from Iraq via USAF Vets I know and some are pretty brutal... One depicts a headshot towelhead from a Marine Sniper... Another shows several towelheads getting vaporized via infrared by a 500 pounder... One minute they were insurgents, next second they were a hot red spot in a hole in the ground... I wouldn't want to meet you guys in a dark alley carrying an AK-47, that's for sure... |

That is the basic setup of the SAW in my unit. Beyond that it is user preference to what is used or what we can get. Bipods range from harris to the gangster grip model. The M145 I do not like as from my past experiences with it I view it as fragile and prone to failure, but thats just my opinion from using it with a M240B. The buttstock I do not have much information on, the old 2 position para-stocks were swapped for those which are more of a M4 type and 6 position. Good stocks as they no longer require jimmy rigging to place in a position that is suitable for CQM or CQC based on the shooter like the para models did. Other than Stryker units I don't know of many or seen of any that are using those kind of buttstocks. I have heard that SF and Rangers have been getting them but I can't confirm on that one. |

Gangster grips are just a nickname for the vertical fore grips, standard issue is KAC. But then you have the gangster grip bipod and individual purchase like TD grips and the like. The M145 MGO (Machine Gun Optic) is the standard issue optic for the SAW and M240B. Its just a Elcan sight, 3.4x with ballistic compensator for ranges out to 1200m. I don't like it as I already stated, having to replace 3 different sights, 2 being brand new from the box, in a period of one year causes me to loose confidence in the sight and its ability to survive in combat conditions. For a SAW I suggest using a EoTech, better for CQC and shooting on the move. A lot of the cool guy stuff will come as you being to gear up for deployment or as your unit can afford. |
I wondered why I kept seeing SAWs with what looked like ELCANs in the news paper. I'm fairly certain that if I do go out as a dismount (and thus get the SAW) my SL will let me use a M68 CCO (my personal preference for optics). I'd be happy with a railed feed tray cover and a CCO. If I can get the other tacticool gear that would be sweet too, but I'm not holding my breath. |

Those would be Iraqi or some sort of indigenous personelle. He's probably training them to fight. I was under the impression that that's what special forces do. Besides wearing whatever they want and what not. My hat's off to you guys!!!!!!!!! Thank you for serving and in such a dangerous and challenging role. |
