I am new to the AR15 world and have enjoyed it VERY much. I have searched the threads and see lots of great input but figured I would get the latest info on the following items for cleaning me AR15: # 1 - In searching for a good cleaning kit, I mostly ran across field kits. I an not really looking for a field kit but more of nice in house cleaning kit that includes most of everything I need. I like the dewey rods that I have seen on here but they seem to be more of seperate parts then kits. Is there a good kit that you can recommend? # 2 - Is a bore guide worth the money or a waiste of money? I have found one made by JP Enterprises that seems nice. Bore Guide # 3 - I see that Break Free CLP comes highly recommended. Is this an all in one or is there still a need for a solvent like hopps 9 and or break free lp? This is confusing to me! # 4 - Are there any other fun toys, I mean tools that you can think of that I will need. I do not really see any need for a bore light/scope but thought someone may have good ideas for detail tools such as dental picks etc.. that may be a good idea to look into. I am not really concerned about cost as I am about keeping it maintained. The way I look at it, not maintaing it correclty will cost me more in the long run, if not by replacment parts, then by it not working in the field when it is a life or death situation! Thanks and I look forward to your input. # 4 - |

First off I know Quib will jump in at some point... #1 I use a one piece Dewey rod in 36" to clean from the chamber to the Bore. This has been well hashed out here, but this works for me. Do not use a screw together rod as they tend to harm the bore due to sharp edges at the joints. Otis kits work well, I use them also. Patch size is important as people have a tendency to use too big of a patch. #2 not needed if you are carefully and pay attention to what you are doing. #3 see Quibs tacked post at the top of the forum. I started using bore foam and it works well. I use Hoppes and FP10 and CLP. You need brake cleaner also. #4 Otis has a kit that has all the scrapers and picks, buy a cheap borelight for bore and chamber inspection. READ the tacked posts at the top of the forum!!!!!!!!!! |
Nothing wrong with the GI cleaning rod if used correctly. For cleaning in my shop, I use #13 above, a one-piece rod. The GI kit goes in with my range gear. |
I use the same, just everyone says the GI rod is a no no. But out and about it still works. Thanx Quib. |
