Some more specifics might help. What kind of shooting will you be doing? Do you want a red dot or magnification, and if so how much? That will help narrow the options down quite a bit.

I went with a nikon buckmaster. Do yourself a favor and get the milspec, do not get the BDC reticle!!!! It covers too much of the target!!!

I've got the Nikon BDC reticle on my magnified SPR with a 4-12x M223, and love it.

OP, you need to give more details than "magnified." There's a big difference between the uses of say 1-4x optics compared to 4-12x and greater.

It really does depend on what you want to do with it. In most cases and medium power optic is a good choice. Say 2-7x. If you want to shoot the eyeball out of squirrels at 300 yards you'll need more magnification. Burris. Leupold. Nikon. All are good enough. I run a 3-9 trijicon with a side mounted burris fast fire for the close stuff.
Works well in the 3 gun world where we have targets anywhere from 3 to 320 yards. Probably would work in some other applications too. Check out the multi mount.

Vortex and Nikon have both been working for me.  I really like my Vortex Viper it is my favorite scope in that price bracket.

I've been going back and forth between the 2-7 VX-R and the 2.5-10 Vortex Viper HS, seem like a couple good affordable options for an AR, low enough to still be fairly quick, and offer a good field of view and low light performance, pretty compact, relatively lightweight, lifetime warranties, still enough mag to stretch it a bit, shoot groups, or small varmints. Of course neither has a ranging reticle, but I have limited use for those on a .223/5.56. Only the VX-R is illuminated, but its actually the same 2.5 on the bottom and more expensive, which tips me towards the Vortex, more power and less money, just curious how the glass compares. Was intially seriously considering the Burris MTAC 1.5-6, has pretty good reviews, but I decided for this rifle I wanted a more traditional reticle.

I have both Nikon Monarch and Vortex Viper scopes and to me, the glass in both is very good, no issues with either. What was the deciding factor to me was the reticle thickness. In my opinion, Vortex has the edge in that department.

The Leupold Mark AR would be a good choice or the Vortex PST. The Nikon for the dollar works well I just recommend the others.
