Greetings!

I am getting ready to replace my upper receiver and barrel with a new one, and I was just wondering… is it better to buy a “complete” upper receiver assembly, with a new bolt and charging lever, etc., or is it okay to simply use the bolt and parts from my current upper in the new one?

Thanks!

As long as your old bolt isn't excessively worn, the it will be fine.

What he said,  as long as your bolt/carrier assy is from a reputable source; like Colt, Bushmaster. or Rock River.

Four of my ARs have bolt assys I bought surplus a couple of years ago. Out of five I bought four of them head spaced under max, and the fifth one didn't close on the field guage.  These were Viet Nam War pieces that had probably been fired thousands of times ---- which shows you how tough these parts are.   Carriers don't ever wear out either, so use what you've got

Guys,

No way should he switch bolts unless he does a good headspace test first.

Akin, do not fire that weapon until you do the headspace test first.

Generally, it's "new barrel, new bolt"...if not, definitely get the headspace checked.  A new bolt is only $50...not a whole lot more than what it might cost in terms of time, effort and expense of finding someone local who can check the headspace for ya.

Sooo do I have this correct?
Same barrel, same bolt, different reciever, no problem?

Well, I follow the "different barrel, matched bolt" rule.  I have 2 lowers (different triggers) and (currently) 3 uppers, and I have bolts and carriers dedicated for each upper.  You could forgo the carrier change out, but the carrier does wear to the upper.  The carrier is not as important as the bolt ( the bolt locking lugs wear into the fit of the barrel extension lugs).
