| I have the opportunity to acquire an AR-15 A2 Law Enforcement 5.56 Carbine. The seller says it is pre-ban but I cannot find anything about the serial number that will tell me for sure. The serial number is LE001xxx. Is there anyway to find out if this rifle is pre or post ban and a value on what it is worth would be great. The gun has about 200 rounds through it and condition is 90-95%. Non folding stock and fixed front sights. Thanks in advance for the help. |

Here's a start: http://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/ar15serial.html
I'm not sure the LE prefixed guns are pre-ban. Your best bet is to call Colt and ask them to verify it's a pre-ban. Also, since you're in NC and there is no state ban, unless you're collecting old Colts, it's not worth any extra premium. ETA: It doesn't have the sliding stock? I was on the phone with Colt this morning and they couldn't tell me pre or post ban for sure. This will be my first AR and I would just like to know how much it is worth in the current market. No, it doesnt have the sliding stock. What does this mean?? |
| A Colt is a Colt and will be the gold standard in AR's. As earlier stated, pre-ban or post ban will not effect the price in NC but will have a premium in a ban state. That said, if this is a garden variety, well kept Colt A2 with an A2(fixed, full)stock, I would say the rifle is in the $750-$800 range. Currently, you can purchase the new SP6920 Colt rifle that is all the rage right now for about $950-$1050 range. If you are looking to buy a Colt AR, I would look to this before you decide to buy. Good Luck! |

But odd, when i called Colt with the SN of my preban R6520 AR-15A2 Govt Carbine, they told me to the month when it was made. In re the sliding buttstock, just kind of points to which specific model it is. Does your gun have a bayonet lug? A couple other pages on that same website that might help you: http://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/variants/ http://www.biggerhammer.net/ar15/coltcolors.html |

Good Luck! Wasn't really looking all that seriously into buying an AR but this opportunity came up through a trade. The guy thinks it is worth about 1000 but now I am leaning towards the 800 range. Will be sure to post pictures of it if/when I take possession. If anyone else has any input it would be greatly appreciated. |

There are some smart "Colt guys" in there that may be able to help you. The last Colt "A2" I purchased was a post-ban Colt MT6551 Target Model: LINK. I paid $800 for that rifle a few months ago.
