| New to AR's. My question is when buying magazines is there a reason to have a 20 rd vs 30 rd mag other than capacity? Reliability etc.... |

Both are reliable... You may find that 20 round magazines are a little more expensive. The benefit to a 20 rounder is there is less interference for bench or prone shooting... I have heard that soldiers like a single 20 rounder to keep in their rifles, as it is easier to get in and out of a vehicle with the small profile. (They carry 30 rounders for reloads). Of course, the downside is they have less capacity. In addition, some new shooters have difficulty orienting the magazine to the rifle (30 rounders are pretty obvious as to which end goes forward at a glance...) ... you get used to it fast, though. I have two NHMTG new 20 rounders, I have one surplus Colt 20 rounder, and I have one MagPul PMag 20 rounder. All function perfectly, except the surplus magazine does not drop free. I have more 30 rounders... but I use them all. |
