| I just started my first build, got a rock river lower and a DPMS LPK on the way. I have been looking up various parts that i want to add to it later when payday comes. I was looking at barrels and i am looking for a 16 inch m4 profile. i noticed that some of them had different rifling from the others. i mostly noticed 1/7 and 1/9 was common, and was wanting to know what is the big difference between the two? and also if any one knows where i could possibly find a good deal on a barrel too. much thanks in advance. |

1/9 ratio will let you shoot 45gr through 62gr 1/7 ratio will let you shoot 55gr through 77gr this is approximate. I prefer 1/7 myself since I like the heavier bullets. Barrels are available from many sources. My preference is chrome lined for corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning, but with good maintenance a chromemoly steel barrel (non-chrome) will last many thousands of rounds. SS is nice, but too heavy for my taste. My last SS barrel AR was a DCM and a tack driver, but heavy as hell. These days all my ARs are 1/7 CL gov't profile and M4 profile. I do like lightweight profile as well. |
This has been beat to death, and its in all the FAQ's, but the answer is pretty easy: 1/7 heavy bullets 75 grain or so 1/9 upto 68 grain bullets, not quite as heavy 1/12 old style, upto 55 grain bullets Good deals? We call it the Equipment Exchange (EE) |
