Obviously the AR bolt is cylindrical.  My question is why doesnt it twist and turn in the receiver while its being fired?  Does the gas key keep it stable?

I think you answered your own question.

I think it's the cam pin that prevents the the bolt from rotating. Maybe the gas key holds the carrier.

I think he is talking about the bolt carrier.

Just so we straighten this out. The bolt carrier is held in place by the gas key. The bolt is is held in by the cam pin, which also rotates the bolt as it locks and unlocks from the barrel extension.

Ya I was refering to the bolt carrier.  I have a habit of calling both the bolt and bolt carrier the "bolt".
