Maybe it's because I'm an Engineer, but I see a real lack of actual data in some of the posts, so I decided to start posting my data when I have time. Here's last Friday's chronographed results. Chronograph is setup 15' in front of the firing line, elevation was 1490' ASL and temperature, humidity and pressure were re-read throughout the day: Firearm: Bushmaster 20" AR15A3 Ammo: Wolf .223 Rem (Black Box) 55 gr FMJ Temp: 81.1 °F Humidity: 31 % Pressure: 29.86 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3010 fps 2 3027 fps 3 3074 fps 4 3076 fps 5 3078 fps 6 3069 fps 7 3013 fps 8 3039 fps 9 3107 fps 10 3011 fps Avg 3050.40 fps ES 97 fps SD 32.84 Firearm: Bushmaster 20" AR15A3 Ammo: Guat M193 IMG 84 Temp: 88 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3269 fps 2 3297 fps 3 3281 fps 4 3288 fps 5 3288 fps 6 3276 fps 7 3228 fps 8 3266 fps 9 3279 fps 10 3268 fps Avg 3274.00 fps ES 69 fps SD 18.00 Firearm: Bushmaster 20" AR15A3 Ammo: Car Ammo Guat M193 IMG 08-88 - this ammo has been in the trunk for ~1 year Temp: 89.8 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3348 fps 2 3314 fps 3 3341 fps 4 3347 fps 5 3310 fps 6 3328 fps 7 3379 fps 8 3379 fps 9 3310 fps 10 3348 fps Avg 3340.40 fps ES 69 fps SD 24.16 NOTES: This ammo was stored in the back of my car for 1 year in Phoenix, AZ, I keep a temperature recorder in my trunk, this ammo saw swings of 88-156F daily in the summer every day except Saturdays and temps as low as 48F in the winter Firearm: Bushmaster 20" AR15A3 Ammo: Guat M193 IMG 87 Temp: 89.8 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3261 fps 2 3308 fps 3 3278 fps 4 3303 fps 5 3258 fps 6 3274 fps 7 3261 fps 8 3261 fps 9 3278 fps 10 3292 fps Avg 3277.40 fps ES 50 fps SD 17.32 *New AR* Firearm: Bushmaster 16" AR15A2 trunk gun Ammo: Wolf .223 Rem (Black Box) 55 gr FMJ Temp: 82.6 °F Humidity: 31 % Pressure: 29.86 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 2938 fps 2 2923 fps 3 2866 fps 4 2828 fps 5 2871 fps 6 2923 fps 7 2914 fps 8 2869 fps 9 2896 fps 10 2907 fps Avg 2893.50 fps ES 110 fps SD 32.38 Firearm: Bushmaster 16" AR15A2 trunk gun Ammo: Guat M193 IMG 84 Temp: 88.9 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3129 fps 2 3128 fps 3 3123 fps 4 3164 fps 5 3151 fps 6 3108 fps 7 3127 fps 8 3133 fps 9 3136 fps 10 3133 fps Avg 3133.20 fps ES 56 fps SD 14.48 Firearm: Bushmaster 16" AR15A2 trunk gun Ammo: Car Ammo Guat M193 IMG 08-88 - this ammo has been in the trunk for ~1 year Temp: 91 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 3199 fps 2 3211 fps 3 3169 fps 4 3214 fps 5 3188 fps 6 3181 fps 7 3249 fps 8 3149 fps 9 3200 fps 10 3183 fps Avg 3194.30 fps ES 100 fps SD 25.98 NOTES: This ammo was stored in the back of my car for 1 year in Phoenix, AZ, I keep a temperature recorder in my trunk, this ammo saw swings of 88-156F daily in the summer every day except Saturdays and temps as low as 48F in the winter *SKS Data* Firearm: Yugo SKS Vortex Flash mod Ammo: Golden Tiger 7.62x39mm FMJ 124gr Temp: 84.6 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 2503 fps 2 2546 fps 3 2501 fps 4 2505 fps 5 2520 fps 6 2499 fps 7 2512 fps Avg 2512.29 fps ES 47 fps SD 15.30 Firearm: Yugo SKS Vortex Flash mod Ammo: Wolf Military Classic 7.62x39mm JHP 124gr Temp: 85.8 °F Humidity: 23 % Pressure: 29.87 inHg Altitude: 1490 ft ASL Date: 5/25/2007 1 2534 fps 2 2466 fps 3 2489 fps 4 2514 fps 5 2529 fps 6 2478 fps 7 2447 fps 8 2487 fps 9 2527 fps 10 2502 fps 11 2461 fps 12 2491 fps 13 2460 fps 14 2476 fps 15 2492 fps 16 2480 fps Avg 2489.56 fps ES 87 fps SD 25.20 Here's some interesting things to note: 1. Black box Wolf 55 gr .223 Rem on average was 231.65 fps slower than Guatemalan M193 (223.6 fps w/ the 20" and 239.7 fps w/ the 16") 2. 4" reduction in barrel length (16" vs 20") yielded an average of 147.93 fps less velocity (156.90 fps w/ Wolf, 140.8 fps w/ '84 Guat, 146.1 fps w/ '88 Guat) 3. Leaving ammo in the high temperatures and high temperature swings of a car's trunk for a year does not effect ammunition as much as I thought it would, it appears to increase the standard deviation by 34% |
I'm the keeper of the data, so you got the right guy. Feel free to update the post or IM me, and I'll add the SBR data. |

The Wolf .223 Rem (Black Box) 55 gr FMJ shot today vs. the same ammo shot 4 days ago in nearly identical weather conditions (82.6 vs 81.5 °F) average 102.9 fps different (2893.5 vs 2996.4 fps) - different lots from two different bulk orders about 3 months apart...I'll have to chrono more black box FMJs to see what the trend is 2. The 4.5" reduction in barrel length from 16" down to 11.5" nets an average loss of 227.53 fps (217.8 specifically with M193), and an average 387.13 fps loss stepping down from a 20" barrel to an 11.5" barrel 3. The 11.5" AR sends M193 out at an average of 2915.4 fps, still within the fragmentation limit and giving fragmentation (2700 fps floor) out to 75-85 meters, plenty for CQB, and extrapolating a bit that should net 2730ish fps with M855 giving you 10-15 meters or so of fragmentation (to the 2700 fps floor) [I'll verify this sometime soon] 4. People say a good amount of horrible things about Greek M193 (Olympic brand), I've shot it for years without issue, I hesitate posting data on it as it may make some people decide to purchase it and I want it all for myself....but since it's all gone look at the NPA 99 and NPA 02 numbers, the ES (extreme spread) is less than Wolf's, the SD (standard deviation) is less than Wolf's (both by good margins), the velocity puts it directly between Wolf black box and Guat M193, actually it's close to spec for M193 (Guat, XM193 and Q3131 are well over 3165 fps +-40 fps out of 20" @ 15' in all my ARs). |

I'm going to do some penetration tests with water jugs this next week. I'll post pictures and reports also. |
