I have a question about the AR manufacturing business.  How does someone typically end up working for a company like Colt, Bushmaster, DPMS, etc?  I'm talking about the guys that actually operate the machines that make the weapons.  It seems like it would be kind of a closed industry and you would have to know someone to get in, but I'm not really sure.  Does anyone know?

Apply to one of their 'want ads'.  They are businesses like any other and occasionally need to hire.

I'm sure like any job, networking or having friends/relatives/previous co-workers does help get yourself in the door.  Especially if some of these places are located in economically-depressed areas.

But that said, having a solid background in industrial engineering, manufacturing, machining, metallurgy, CNC, quality assurance would definitely help.  If there are any in your area that you're specifically looking at, write a nice letter to their HR director, telling them you'd be interested in knowing what it takes to work there, and how you might better prepare yourself for something.  Volunteer for an internship or something if you're in school.

Oh, also, since some of these are .mil contractors and ISO organizations, I'd think they'd not be interested in anyone who couldn't pass a basic criminal background check.

Here's what sounds like cool jobs at FN in South Carolina, hell I'd do some of this for free!
