I just finished cleaning my AR and I was testing the charging handle, action, etc. to ensure everything was good and assembled correctly. I tested my trigger as well and everything clicked. I did notice that after I tested the trigger the safety would not engage until after I pulled back on the charging handle and re-cocked the rifle. Is this normal operation for an AR? I never thought of this before and just wanted to be certain there isn't a problem with the rifle before I go back to the range. Thanks.

Always did seem kinda backwards.... have the hammer cocked to be able to engage the safety. Try that with a revolver.

If the hammer is not cocked, the gun can not fire, so what used would it be to put on a safety?

That's what it's suppose to do and NEVER force your selector lever to safety after you uncocked the hammer as you are bound to break something when you do. Good luck.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate all the help in clearing up my question.

Normal.  It's a single action trigger.  Just like a 1911, Browning High Power, most every shotgun and rifle made.  The hammer just isn't visible, so most people don't think about it.  No visible reminder like an exposed cocked hammer.
