I have a friend who is looking to buy a lower receiver from a private party and something doesn't seem right. I would like to see if it might be stolen without my friend knowing but I don't know the manufacturer. I was able to write the serial number without him knowing. The number starts with "DSF". I was hoping someone might be able to tell me who the manufacturer is before my friend buys it and gets "jammed up" with something. Thanks for any help

Sometimes serial numbers have things other than #'s

I'm confused as to what you're worried about here.

What "didn't seem right" about the lower?

In firearms purchases, if something doesn't seem right, you should probably pass up on the deal. Not worth getting a "hot" gun.

You mean like this:

Spikes that begins with RM

or

BCM that begins with US

To start - What is the concern, Quality or Stolen property?

If Theft, as already posted prior, if warning lights are going off, listen to your instinct.  That said, even if you want to do any serial checking, you will need the entire serial (not just the first 3 char).  If you get this, there is a list in the EE for a start.  Sure others can help with suggestions once you have this much.

If Quality, You really need the name or at min the Rollmark (pic on side, if one).  Was it a Horse, Spider, Panther, a Word, Abreviation eg DSA or BCM, anything that you recall?  If you have this, someone here prob will be able to SUGGEST what the manufacturer is, and then go from there on member input (still not 100% - opinions are just that, but you can at least get input).

Point is need more info here that what you've got/provided thus far....

I dont think a serial number that contains a few letters is remotely close to the "hot gun" scenario.
There are many more things to be worried and paranoid over.
Now if the serial number is ground out or engraved on to it in an obvious home job manner... Be aware

Now consider not every stolen gun has the serial # ground out...

I don't know about in your neck of the woods, but the only way to check that where I'm from is to take the serial number to the local sheriffs office, and have them run the number. I'd just pass it up, and order one from an FFL dealer. Risk is totally not worth the reward.
