I've got this idea stuck in my head. I keep thinking it must be impossible or someone would have done it already. Has anyone ever built an AR (AR-10 platform) to fire 7.62 x 54R? I am hoping someone will tell me it can't be done so I can forget about it. It certainly would be a whole lot more powerful and a whole lot cheaper to shoot than 5.56. Seems like you could using a .308 lower with a 7.62 barrel if you fabricated a custom barrel extension to accommodate the longer cartridge. Any thoughts? |

Can't be done. A 7.62x54R is roughly the length of a 30-06 and thus will not fit through an AR-10 action. It would MAYBE be possible with one of the COBB MCR rifles but it would take a lot of custom work on building a mag, machining out the bolt face, etc.
