I have an AR question..a friend has an AR SP1, and although I haven't seen it, he describes the lower receiver as having two holes drilled behind the safety switch. He's been told that this makes this an "altered" thus illegal gun..........no other modifications have been made to it. Is this illegal??????? I haven't seen the gun, but I can't see how mere holes drilled in the lower would make it illegal. You have to drill a lower to configure it to accept 9mm.... |
If it has a hole drilled for an auto sear, and it is not registered, it could be considered illegal. I would suggest he contact a class III dealer to inform himself and see what his options are (i.e. maybe sledge hammer, cutting torch). Alterations needed for 9mm conversion are primarily to the magazine well as far as the lower receiver is concerned. |

The holes sound like the pin holes for the receiver block. Looks like someone removed the Colt installed receiver block. No it's not illegal - perfectly legal to remove the block - many have done it. If it were drilled for an Auto sear it would be be ONE hole OVER the Selector Switch (not two behind it). A hole for an Auto sear, in a non NFA registered lower would be illegal. |
