I heard the AWB will go sunset in Oct., 2004. Does that mean we can purchase AR15 in California??? Anyone know ??? If yes, I need to start saving money now.

The federal AW ban will sunset on 9/14, but the California AW ban has no sunset provision.  You'll be stuck with it unless your state ban is repealed by an act of your state legislature, regardless of the federal  ban's status.

I just had an interesting thought, which doesn't happen often. If the AWB sunsets, and next January we happen to get a new (gun grabber) president who creates a new AWB. Will those weapons that were produced between the current AWB and a new AWB (God forbid) be a "second generation pre-ban"???

If my sister's brother's cousin buys a postban today, then on Sept. 14th will
it be a post-pre-preban or a ban-post-pre-didly?

And that means I can put full auto parts in it and a 10" bbl too right?

My gunsmith made an interesting comment.  He said that even when the ban sunsets, he still won't turn a post-ban rifle into pre-ban configuration until he sees official notification from the ATF that this is now legal to do.

On this issue, I disagree with him.   The ATF does not make the laws, congress does.  And when the ban sunsets, it has sunset and is no longer an active or valid law regardless of the presence or absence of a letter to that effect by the ATF, or for that matter, even the ATF's opinion or ruling on the matter will be of no great importance.

My post-ban rifle(s) will get their missing cool features on the very day that the ban has expired, period.

Probably. If they make your property illegal they have to pay you full price for it, right?

Do as I have done. Tool up and teach yourself the necessary gunsmithing skills. I can change out a post ban barrel for a new pre-ban configured barrel on 20 minutes if I need to.

You will not be able to buy AW's in Kali, but if you were like me and stocked up before the ban, you can look forward to changing post bans into pre ban configurations.

There will be guys that post saying that you can't, but when I ask the for there explanation why, all you'll get is  [:D].

Watch and learn.

BTW If you don't own any AW's now, there are still some options for you here in Kali. Though not as attractive as the AR, there better than nothing.

You could always get a single shot pump action ak lookin thing with a thumbhole stock and a 10 round non detachable mag from century arms. Sweet

You could get a M1A scout, M1A, Mini-14, or worst case scenario, a M1 carbine.

Now if you lived in a class III state you could get a HKG36, SIG550, HK MP5, and so on. The only problem is you make $12.50 an hour, and as stats. on this board have shown, probably could not afford the license let alone the weapons.

Has anyone ever given this ban thing any serious thought? I am in no way saying to break the law or imnplying that I do, but what are the chances that the ATF would EVER find out if you put a collapsible stock on your "post-ban" AR? Has anyone here ever been visited by the local ATF office because they were in violation of a federal law? I am just curious.

In CA, you can still buy CMP M1's, heavy, but nice long range (non CQB) battle rifle.
I just hope things don't get that bad in MA; we can still buy the evil black rifle, evil AK ("Normal capacity").

If you live in CA you can own a .22 long rifle caliber AR type rifle.

Why?

The CA AWB only covers CENTERFIRE rifles.

Better than nothing.

What my congressman says about the AWB...ain't it nice to have him as a congressman; that is until 2005 because of our redistricting.

Dear Mr. Klekar:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the reauthorization of the so-called semi-auto weapons ban.  It was a pleasure to hear from you.

As you know, the law, which was passed in 1994, is scheduled to sunset next year.  Since coming to Congress in 1997, I have been working to repeal this ban, reintroducing my bill each Congress.  My HR 153, the Second Amendment Protection Act of 2003, not only repeals the semi-auto ban, but also does away with the Brady Law ("instant" registration check) and amends the Gun Control Act of 1968 by deleting the "sporting purposes" test, which allows the Secretary of Treasury to regulate away "non sporting" firearms.

The Second Amendment guarantees that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed by Congress.  The 1994 Crime Bill infringed upon law-abiding citizens by banning certain firearms.  Gun control advocates have defined firearms that only externally resemble military firearms as "assault weapons."  True assault weapons are designed to produce only roughly aimed bursts of full automatic fire -- something which semiautomatic firearms do not do.

Please be assured I will fight any movement, including bills such as HR 2038, that reauthorize this unconstitutional ban; our gun rights need to be restored, not restricted. In fact, I, along with 14 other Members of Congress, sent a letter to the president requesting that the administration oppose reauthorization of the Clinton-Feinstein-Schumer ban on certain semi-automatic weapons.  This was written in response to the statement given by the president's spokesman, Scott McClellan, saying that the president supports the reauthorization of the 1994 ban.  As you know, the semi-auto ban is useless in preventing violent crime. Contrary to the propaganda of gun control supporters, only a very small percentage of crimes are committed with so-called assault weapons.  The last thing we need is more gun control.

Again, thank you for contacting this office with your grave concern.  I'm glad to know of your support.

Sincerely,

Ron Paul

Now that an interesting loophole.

So you buy a AR15 with a 22LR upper and you are good to go right?

Then you get a FAB10 lower with a 5.56MM upper, then of course only when you leave the state you can put the 5.56MM upper on the other lower.HMMMM!! very interesting....
