Maybe I think too much but I am curious if anybody knows the answer.
Lets say that the only barrel you can find for your build that meets your specs is stainless. But, you hate stainless so you decide to go ahead with the build and paint the barrel. I know theres ways to blue stainless but lets just say you want to spray it and get it over with. Now, blueing is in the steel and paint is on the steel so would the paint change the harmonics any and affect accuracy in any way? Thats my question and I'm stikin to it, I think... |
| Thanks. Actually my question was more about a bolt gun than an ar. I can't stand stainless and theres one calling my name that I "have" to have. I'm figuring a dull flat black would dress her up for the dance right nice. Any particular paint you would recommend? |

Krylon. Its cheap, easy and can be touched up easily. Duracoat or Alumahyde is polymer based and will last longer but is more money and labor intensive. More ideas here |
| I have painted every one of my precision bolt guns with Krylon for the reasons mentioned above. I have shot most before and after and have not noticed any change in accuracy. the main benefit to Krylon for me is it easy to touch up or remove if needed to sell or to adapt to new environments |
| Thanks for all the very helpful replies. Looks like you just take the bolt out and spray the rest. I have a Kimber that I love and want another in a different caliber––just cant stand the stainless. This should go a long way in solving my problem, and if it dosnt affect the accuracy them I'm good to go. Thanks again..... |

I took the action out of the stock, taped off the trigger group, safety and the action area. Getting paint in the moving parts is bad juju |
