The question:
Can a pistol buffer be used with a rifle length barrel?  Can a 9mm kit with a rifle length barrel be used with a pistol buffer?

Here's why:
I am thinking of a new project.  I have completed a crank driven cam device for my 1919a4. It has turned out quite well, and now I am thinking about a .22lr version of a crank/cam unit.  I wish I could make a .22lr conversion for my 1919, but that is a bit much.  Well, I have an AR and the .22lr conversion kit for that, so I thought about making a special designed lower that would have no pistol grip per se, but be similar to a 1919.  It would intigrate the cam design I have used before.  I know I don't need the buffer for the .22lr, but this then led to the thought, what if I could add a pistol buffer to it.  Could the pistol buffer be used and setup fire .223?  Could this also be used with 9mm?

What do you think?
