I've tried 8 different brands of ammo in my M&P 15 5.56  1:9 twist at 100 yards with a Nikon 3-9x scope.  5 - 10 mph wind right to left.  Narrowed it down to these three.
Hornady     .223 55 gr.   1.625" group
Federal      .223 55 gr.    1.75 " group
Black Hills  .223 68 gr.    1.75 " group
Is this the best I should expect or should I be doing  better?  The gun has about 200 rnds thru it and the trigger still seems a bit rough.

Assuming you have standard (non-free float) handguards, your results are as good as can be expected.

Thanks Mongoose 16.  I guess I'll have to see what that entails.

If you install a free float handguard, you could reasonably expect your groups to shrink to just under one inch... (provided the shooter does his part.)

A better trigger helps too!

Sounds good to me.  Any suggestions on a particular brand?

Free Float in theory should make a rifle more consistent, not necessarily more accurate. Unless one is really winding up a sling tight I don't think its is such a big deal.  YMMV

At any rate try (if you can find any)  Win " Varmint 45gr 3600fps" . I have found it to be a good shooter in several different 1/9 bushmaster barrels.
Before you spend a bunch on a Free Float I would first look at your trigger situation

All mine have YHM free float tubes on them.  I like them.  But there are other good brands out there too.  Take a look around and see what you like.  I really like the YHM customizable forend because it has a very slim profile that feels good in my hands, but also lets me put rails on it where I want them.

Here is a pic of one of mine:

Thanks nhsport.  Being new to this firearm I appreciate all suggestions.  After zeroing in doesn't consistency equate to accuracy? Again, just trying to understand all aspects.
