Is there a large difference in accuracy between using a conversion kit on a .223 upper versus a dedicated .22 upper? I ask because there is a large price difference. I don't shoot a whole lot of .223, but I burn through .22s. I don't mind breaking a gun down and cleaning it, if that's the only problem. So I ask, is there a large difference between the barrels, if so, does it effect accuracy?

Thanks,
SCSchultz

Edit:

The current barrel on my upper is a a 16" Wilson R-4 Chrome Moly, 1:9 twist.

the difference is between the conversion kit starting the bullet down the barrel by jumping from a smooth bore adapter to the rifling of the .223 barrel, which is just a slight amount too big a bore dia.  depending on the kit, that adapter can move slightly, which will change POI erratically. with a 22upper, there is no transisition, since the chamber/rifling are fixed.

shooting with a decent scope, a 22 conversion with a .223 1:9 twist barrel at 50yds is probably capable of 5shots in  a 3" circle, maybe even better, but not 1" groups, IMHO.
.  a dedicated 22 upper is probably capable of 5shots in a 1" circle, easily, and given good ammo, and practice, maybe sub 1/2" groups.  what do you want to achieve? if practice to be a better shot with your .223 setup, then I'd say a .223 converted upper will meet your needs. If you want to kill ground squirrels at 50yds, or Zombies at 100yds, you will need a dedicated 22upper.  IMHO.

It'll be for plinking and hunting. I guess dedicated is the way to go. I already have a dedicated, but was considering a conversion. If the difference is that large, I'll stick with a dedicated.

Thanks

Check Here for more specific details about the accuracy differences. My post #692 about 2/3 of the way down the page.
Remember these tests were run with Federal Bulk on all testing up to this point. There are great differences between it
and a better grade of ammo.

Very detailed as well. Thanks for that. It's exactly what I was looking for. For my use, it'll be best sticking with a dedicated upper (TacSol).

Thanks again, guys.
