Hey guys - need your help. I've been a shooter/hunter/collector/reloader for over 30 years, but I am brand new to the AR world. I've read that Les Bear ARs will shoot 1/2" groups, but I have seen very little posted here on Baer rifles. I value that level of accuracy, and while I'm sure these must be fine rifles, they are expensive. I'm about to attempt my first AR build and would like to approach/achieve this level of accuracy. First, is it do-able? If not, what are reasonable accuracy expectations on an indvidual build? What are your recommendations (hardware, equipment, assemble techniques, etc.)? As an AR-newbie, I have no hardware preferences and am open to all constructive recommendations. Thanks for your help. |

I'd say that you can achieve 1/2" groups (you're talking about 100yard ranges, right?) with an AR that's built from properly selected, quality parts. First, do your homework. I always figured that a longer, heavier barrel would yield better accuracy every time-you know, more bore for the powder to do its thing, heavier barrel for stiffness and heat conduction... Anyway, it looks like barrel length with an AR is not at all that cut and dried. And barrel profile is a matter for heated debate; the consensus is that heavy barrels are a manufacturer's ploy to sell barrels that take less time to manufacture. I dunno. I'm still messing with my flip-up rear sight on a new 16" carbine. I KNOW that the rifle should shoot better than I can, but I also KNOW that I can shoot better than that! |

If you want to build your own tackdriver, 1. Buy a stripped lower of your choice 2. Order from WOA: (http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/) lower parts kit (3lpk Lower parts kit(less trigger) $36.52 ) John Holliger's tuned RRA 2 stage trigger (3RRT National Match Trigger $115.00) WOA upper of your choice ( service rifle, match, etc.) Stock of your choice (EE is a good source) 3. Put it all together and take the money you saved to buy ammo to practice with. Almost forgot the important part. Find out where your local NRA / CMP club meets and join them - they will give you the insights on how to shoot an AR15 to the best of your ability. |
| Les Baer is renowned for being able to back up his claims. If I was to buy one it would be his. I used a mega upper and lower, JP single stage trigger and a barrel ordered directly from Krieger. With several factory loads it does 1/2 MOA. My 13 year son shot it for the first time(his first rifle shoot as well) off my bags and bench and printed a 1" group! I have yet to handload and expect to see these groups go even lower. If you do it your self, there are several barrel makers that seem to make the grade, Krieger, Lilja,Obermeyer. Makers such as Douglas etc seem to be mediocre and not as consistent as the custom makers. Good barrel, good trigger and you are on target. There are several chamberings for a 223 so do some homework. Take a look at Kriegerbarrels.com. |
