Hi all,

I'm in the process of finishing a build with a Adams Arms mid length system. I've got the build all the way done, but I've got a problem.

The bolt carrier sticks inside buffer tube. Every time, it sticks in there. The build has never been fired. I've swapped the upper on to different lowers, and it still happens. I've swapped the bolt carrier to different uppers, and there is no issue with cycling.

I went to a local gunsmith, and he said the issue was the upper receiver being out of spec. Before I take this all apart and ship the upper receiver back, I thought I'd ask the hive for any advice.   Anything I should try or that I'm missing?

possibly the buffer tube.  There is a difference between mil spec buffer tubes and universal/civilian tubes

The difference is outside diameter not inside.  I own both and neither cause the problem listed above with either of my two BCG's.  Also for that to be the issue, commercial tubes wouldn't thread into mil spec lowers, which they can without issue.

I had a similar issue with mine.  After many hours of lubing and polishing without fixing the bolt carrier getting stuck.  I eventually got around to loosening the buffer tube nut and retightening.  My carrier was actually stuck in the buffer tube when I loosen the nut.  The bolt carrier now slides in and out of the buffer tube without sticking or rubbing the tube.  Just a thought give it a try.

See posting on adams arms quirk below. I had the same thing. I loosened the buffer tube nut, slid the bolt back then tightened the tube nut with the bolt held back. No more problems after that. Ran 180 rnds thru it without a hitch

I will give this a try this week. Did you leave the spring and buffer in the tube?

Yes I did. Everything on the weapon is Milspec, I even contacted Vltor whose buffer tube and stock I have, and they had never heard of it happeneing. I think its just a cause from a slightly beefier bolt carrier and everything needs to be dead nuts on.

Had the same problem with my AA kit and I was using a Vltor buffer tube also.  I swapped out the ACLM charging handle I was using for a Gunfighter and it cycled without any problems after that.

I am using an Armalite Mil-Spec tube, the carrier doesn't get stuck. I tried the same upper on a lower with a DPMS commercial M4 stock, and I can feel the carrier binding inside the tube.

Interesting. I'm using a Gunfighter and a UBR. I'll do some swapping as well and see if that helps.

[font=Arial]I also recently got my adams arms competition upper and put it on my S&W lower and the bolt carrier was sticking in the buffer tube.  I fix the problem by lossening the castle nut.  For some reason if I tighten the castle nut not much the bilt carrier jams.

Are all of these problems with the carrier sticking using the Adams Arms carrier?

I finally got around to putting together a 7.62x39 upper that I had been collecting parts for (still need a float tube) and fired a few rounds to check function, this afternoon.  I used the carbine length kit that just comes with a new carrier key to convert a standard carrier.  I had some problems with short stroking (crud clogging a gas port that seemed a bit small), but no problems with the carrier sticking, even after I opened the gas port slightly and got it cycling.

Just a stupid question (I do this a lot) about your carrier sticking in the buffer tube. Does your Adams Arms piston carrier have the anti-tilt sections on the rear of the carrier? I was just wondering if this might make the carrier slightly larger in diameter in the rear end and you might have a slightly tight buffer tube? I  don't know what the tolerances are for the buffer tube inside diameter but it might be a hair undersized but still in specs. Did anybody call Adams Arms about this?

Yes to both, at least for me.

So, quick update.  This weekend I loosened the buffer tube and reassembling it carefully with the bolt carrier locked back. It took a few tries, but eventually the bolt carrier stopped getting hung up.

You can definitely tell that if everything isn't right on, the carrier hangs.  I guess you just have to be very slow and precise, otherwise the noticeably bulkier Adams Arm carrier gets stucks.

I read about this business of loosening the buffer tube  (lock nut) and then retightening it in another thread that's a bit older and wondered if it worked for everyone. If it does in most cases I would say you are right about being precise with putting things together when using the AA piston kit.
