I want to add a set of handguards so I can mount a tac light.  Looks like a lot of people prefer the one piece free-floated ones, but I am thinking about a two piece.  My thinking is, for one it is easy to install and second, if something were to happen to my gas tube I could replace it a lot quicker since I lack the action block and vice needed to change bbl's.

Thoughts?

There are plenty of 2 piece drop in rails, and unless you want to mount an optic, most will do fine for you.

Several options there.

That two piece on the top is exactly what I am looking at.  Bravocompany has some cool stuff.  All I want to do is be able to add a tac light.

In the best of ARFcom traditions get both.  Get a FF 2 piece system like a Troy or Sampson (last time I bought one they were around $250).

Otherwise there are a bunch of decent 2 piece non-FF systems out there, Sampson just introduced a non-FF 2 peice system that looks like it's the 'best' of the bunch - proper rails, one of the lighter units, and under $200.

You can also get a small bolt on rail for normal plastic handguards.  I am using this to mount a verticle grip to my M4 handguards and it is working out very well for me.

VTHOKIESHOOTER,

The YHM or MI 2 piece rails are pretty close in price, and will both work well for light and/ or VFG.

+1

Mine are rock-solid (YHM) - I use both their carbine and mid-length versions, and am happy with both.

MI ones I just installed are rock solid.  Even tighter than my YHM.

Watch the EE, with so many new styles of  rails on the market the old KAC M4 RAS's are showing up pretty cheap.

These are the MI rails installed, along with the ladder rail guards. It took about 5 minutes to install, and is pretty nice.

If you arent looking to build a sub-MOA shooter, and dont plan on adding optics to the front rails.... there is no reason to FF the barrel.

The two piece designs from YHM, KAC, etc... will do the trick just fine, for lights and VFG's.

I am VERY pleased with the Surefire M73 handguards for my RRA M4.

They are very solid and tight.

Check the EE boards. I picked mine up for like $75, in great condition.

I know I am probably gonna get flamed for this but....What about the ones you bolt onto the front sight tower? Are they any good, junk or what? I have seen them with a weapon light and they seemed to be very sturdy. I've seen em for around $35

For just holding a flashlight, those would be fine...

Fobus M33 bottom only.  One kit does 2 rifles.  $45 per rifle.

I have the MI 2 piece free-float, and am quite happy with it.

However, let me lead you down tha path I took:

I wanted a set of fore-end rails, so started thinking of what to buy.

The MI 2 piece free-float had just become available, so I thought, well, if I am going to replace the handguards, I may as well get the free-float version and get that benefit too. The MI looks good because its easy to fit (it is).

So I got my MI kit.

Then thought: why ruin a perfectly good delata ring/spring, its easy enough to whip the barrel off...

5 minutes later, the barrel is off.

Then I look at the front "holder" for the handguards up against the FSB and thing "that really doesn't need to be there - serves no purpose - looks a bit odd"

Another 5 minutes later the FSB and "holder" (what is that thing called...?) is off.

At this point, I realise that I may as well have bought a one-piece free-float tube !

Anyway, its still a good handguard !

I gave up getting my fobus to hold my light from moving and falling out..... short of gluing it in place.  My knights light holder works great.

MI, YHM are both good and will get the job done.

Unless your building a tack driver, then skip the added cost of FF and spend it on ammo, mags, ect. Id only consider the MI FF 2-piece because its extremely cost effective as compared to the Troy system.

While I know what you are talking about, I've had pretty good luck.   Bought these awhile ago when there were less options on the market
