| If you could have an adjustable gas block made to your liking, how many settings would you want from fully open to fully closed? I like the noveske switchblock, but it only has 3 settings, and my PRI block has a set screw that isn't really easily repeatable in its adjustments (basically set it and then lock-tite it). |

I have the PRI with set screw. I've never experienced a need to Loctite it. I use 3 settings on it and have not had the set screw move by itself. Note: this is in 300 BLK; I've not used the PRI in .223/5.56. One load uses 1 turn out from fully closed; one uses 1 1/2 turns out; my main load (used about 95% of the time) uses 3 turns out, which is what I leave it set on. When I first got it, I was concerned about the adjustment screw moving so I watched it very carefully for any evidence of movement.
Anyway, my preference is for infinite adjustment choices, as I'm using very light to full power hunting loads in my 300 BLK. |
| I have one of these gas blocks not cheap but so far it has been working well. |

I've always wished that someone would make a FAL-style adjustable gas block for the AR. In the meantime, I use JP. Me too. I've wanted to have a block that had settings that I could easily adjust with indicators. I have my rifle set for Wolf Ammo, but would love to click the gas block a few positions to run my higher power stuff, or another setting for suppressed shooting. |

One of the coolest gas block innovations I've seen is on the Noreen Bad News .338 LM AR. It has 3 settings, and each setting is adjustable individually. I looked at them like they're crazy when they said it, and then they broke it down and showed me how each setting is adjustable. Pretty nifty.
I wish someone would take a FAL gas block and rig a gas tube to it already. Armalite did a great job with their SASS gas block, and it seals the gas tube very efficiently to the block to reduce leakage. I wish they sold it individually, but you have to buy their railed fore end with it as a set. |

Good job Rich_V I feel the same way about what is available in adjustable blocks and have made them too http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa166/redtazdog/Mega308done30w.jpg Thanks Red I've seen some of your work and was very impressed. How many positions does your block have? I'm guessing the front block is just a support bearing for the adjustment shaft? |

This one is a three position adjusment, off suppressed and unsuppressed all tuned for each setting. All stainless and yes the front block is a support for the shaft and switch as I wanted a long hand guard for this build with the gas block under the hand guard with ease to the switch. I have made a few others but without the extension to the switch. I have a couple other AR's with the switchblock and liked them so much that i made my own for other builds and calibers. I can thank Noveske for not coming out with switchblocks for other calibers as it pushed me to start making my own + my version doesnt get carbon build up and a sticky switch after many rounds. |

Sounds like you used a similar port mechanism as Noveske. When I was considering designs for my build I thought about using a selectable 'set' port size but couldn't come up with a design that had more than 3 or 4 holes. I went with a needle type valve design with dent stops for 12 positions. The body is 17-4 and the valve mechanism is 300 series SS. The one in the photo is now on my AR10. I was very surprised how over gassed my gun was, it runs just fine with the block open just 3 clicks. It reduced the bolt velocity and felt recoil and now the brass is in a nice neat pile a few feet from the bench. I'm putting these on my AR15's now to see if I get similar results. For my 300 whisper upper I have a pistol length gas system and the block is by necessity under the free float hand guard. For that adjustable gas block I have the valve orientated straight up so that the adjustment knob comes out from the top of the hand guard. Seeing your setup I may make something similar so it is adjustable from the front. It is rather surprising that no one has marketed a decent adjustable gas block for the AR system. |
