I'm thinking about buying a AP M4E1 upper for a build. Any thoughts on this upper? http://aeroprecisionusa.com/m4e1-16-223-wylde-complete-upper.html
Any other options for around the same price and as accurate or better? Should I buy one of their lowers while I'm at it or do you recommend a better one? Thanks |

My one concern with the upper you've selected is the proprietary (as I understand) nature of it with the handguard and barrel nut. You may be limited in any changes down the road in parts compatibility. |

they look fine to me. not a real steal but good for the most part.
probably uses this barrel as they own ballistic advantage http://ballisticadvantage.com/16-inch-223-wylde-tacgov-mid-length-ss-premium-barrel-ops12.html |

I think the barrel nut is integrated into the upper so you are limited to AP handguards. Also I agree with your Ballistic Advantage barrel recommendation 100%. |

I would buy this:
Ballistic Advantage 16" barrel $95 and Aero M4E1 12" upper $200 Find someone near you via the home town forum that can help you assemble the upper (super easy with the M4E1 upper). Buy a cheap used or new A2 flash hider and crush washer, gas tube and gas block of your choice. Or contact Schuyler Arms (a site dealer on here) and ask if they can get you that same upper cheaper. |

Schuyler Arms upper and rail with one of these barrels Hansen 16" mid gas with pinned gas block for $170 shipped. |

The barrel nut is a proprietary design, but the upper ships with the nut and wrench included. Once you have the upper and barrel nut, why would there be any reason to worry about it? There are other handguards out there that will work with the M4E1 upper, so it's not "totally" proprietary. Any of the Seekins Precision BAR handguards will work, and most other rails based off of the BAR design will as well. AP offers their rails in picatinny, M-Lok, or Keymod in a variety of lengths as well; so it's not like you're limited to only a couple of choices. This is probably as close as you can get to having a monolithic upper without paying a monolithic price. Everything locks up rock solid and the fit and finish is excellent. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide to go this route. |

I love the Aero M4E1. Mine is a Very accurate rifle. I think AP is a greatly under appreciated brand. Excellent fit and finish and quality materials used to assemble them. You won't be disappointed. http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll190/fuzzyreticle/Aero%20M4E1/d43b307c6b2af02068c9a2d60bb7a01a_zpsgrad7evx.jpg I have the M4E1 complete upper in FDE and it is top notch stuff. Very sturdy connection between the hand guard, barrel and upper. Mine is very accurate as well. Would reccomend. |

ETA: Just wanted to point the limited nature of it out to OP in case he wanted to make a change down road. |

Not doubting the performance or quality of the Aero kit. I change handguards like underwear so I'm wary of commiting to a setup like that (though I feel awful hypocritical as I took delivery on a LMT MRP today) but that's what multiple rifles are for. That is correct, you only have a handful of options if you want to change rails when going with the M4E1 upper. You can use Mlok, Keymod or Quad rails. You can also use most any bar type rail such as Seekins, PA and a few others. |
| Aero is good stuff. Got a "plain" A3 style upper with a WOA 7.5" barrel on a pistol build. Put a 9.5" Nordic hand guard over the barrel with a KAK flash can on the barrel to get about 1/2" past the end of hand guard. Looks great! Fits great! And I somehow manage 3" groups at 50 yards. I also picked up one of their "Ghost Gun" lowers after California's DeLeon made his dumb comments about AR's shooting 30 rounds in 1/2 a second, from a "30 CALIBER CLIP". Lol. Finish is perfect. Safe/fire markings are [D] for safe, ".30 CALIBER CLIP" for fire, and if I had a happy switch full auto selection is labeled /HALF SEC. Stuck it in the safe next to the JP trigger springs. Aero not only makes great stuff but also has a good sense of humor. |

All but one of mine are Aero, and one is an M4E1 set, but more will come eventually. I wish I had gone with the M4E1 before I had spent a dime on any other free float system...the M4E1 is the only one I will use going forward. This makes me feel good. I bought 3 from Schuyler when they had them on sale.
The folks over at Schuyler are good people, I ordered the day before I left for vacation so I noted my order to not be shipped until I got back, two weeks later. They shipped on the day I asked with no additional communication. All that while they were in the middle of moving warehouses. |
