With the Aimpoint's battery life being at 50,000 hours or 5.7 years and its on my home defense gun would you guys leave it on 24/7 or turn it on only when its in use?

Both of mine are ALWAYS ON and ALWAYS READY.

You could turn it off. No one is going to come over to your house and beat you over the head with a bat if you do...

Obtw, that 50,000 hours is on level 7...

Here's a crazy thought: Turn it down a setting or two and it'll last even longer! I must be insane, huh?

Yeah, Ive been keeping mine off, but i might change that.  I just picked up 2 batteries for like $2.50, that ought to keep it running for over 10 years.

I leave mine off. Batteries may be cheap w/an insane service life but the Aimpoint's LED has a service life as well and it's not as cheap or easy to replace.

HD gun+ always on, unless you can plan when you're going to need it.

Sounds like a good question for Aimpoint, I would like to know also.  Maybe I'll shoot them an email or call.

My T-1 has been on since June 08.... I leave it on...
I don't worry about LED life... just my life.. The T-1 can be fixed....

Hmm so you go to grab your weapon and led bulb is burned out.....

I want to know what the life of the LED is also before I decide to leave it on for no good reason.

This is a very valid point.  I thought this.  "Tomac" pointed it out.  But what is the LED "Mean Time to Failure"  (MTTF) or "Mean Time to Replacement" (MTTR), on their LEDs?

I would expect it to be greater than the 50K hours of always on time.

I am basically thinking out loud.

Slap me down if I am not getting it.  But set me straight.

Thanks.

Edited to add: Harv24, I have read what you say about Aimpoints and agree, but the "can be fixed" part leaves me "uneasy".  Can be fixed by who?  Aimppoint ?   If so, that means an "outage" or "out of service" situation.

Please email me a clarification if you can, since I am currently poor and not a "Team Member".  I am not one to buy new Aimpoint to make sure I am outliving an LED.   I see stats on 5-12 years for MTTF on LEDs with a very high level Google search.

I am looking at it from a Time/Energy/$Budget Perspective.  "Off" to me, means longer life.  "On" means ready for anything, but realize it "may" be at a cost.  So it comes down to the trade-off between always on the +'s associated with that, and any -'s of the "turn it on" when I need it.. if I remember to turn it on.

Thanks in advance for any assistance/clarification.

Whats the difference if your battery is off or the LED goes?

The thing ain't on either way, only difference is if its just your battery, it will take you a minute to correct it versus a trip to aimpoint.

I leave mine on, but I too am curious to  hear about the LED's service life.

In the unlikely event that your battery should go dead on you, that's when you put those BUIS to good use....

Guys, FJB, aimpoints contact guy for the military has stated that current LED life is so geat that it was basically a moot point to even worry about it. I can't remember what thread it was or even what forum but I do remember this same question was asked and he answered it. If I get bored today I will look and see if I cand find the info.

That would be helpful, I do undestand the "leave it on mentality" completely but would love to have an idea what the effect of this is
