i have a compc3, bought it because i don't scuba dive here in az and the chances of using nv gear is about 0%. so just out of curiosity, the first couple clicks of the knob don't illuminate the led, illumiation starts around 3 or so. are the first couple just dead on the c3 model?

No, they are brightness settins just like the ML3.

10 settings

Off
8 DAYLIGHT
1 EXTRA BRIGHT

Don't know why they call them all daylight settings, the first couple are dim and should be called night time settings.

I have the same model. The first two clicks won't show up in a dark room. The others cover pretty much everything I would need so I guess it works out.

Till I changed the battery from the one that was included, it was the first 3 clicks that wouldn't show up in the dark room.

The first few clicks are only visible if you are in pitch black and your eyes are fully night adapted. Even then the lowest is barely visible, at least to me.
