I just bought a used Aimpoint M2 off of a vendor/ex-vendor and I noticed that there is a "halo" around the dot.  It looks like a complete red ring that is the size of the tube (30mm).  It's apparent on the highest 2 settings.  Is this normal?

I know my clone point doesn't have this halo and it kinda suprised me when I saw it on the Aimpoint.

Thanks,

Yea.. it's normal, cause your crankin up to it's Highest setting. You clone most likely does not do it cause the red dot most likely cannot get as bright as an Aimpoint.

The difference would be noticeable in bright daylight (desert) environments when you need to crank up your dot to see it.

Actually, the clone is tad brighter I believe.    Or the dot's bigger.  And this ring/halo is noticeable outside in the sun.

I didn't notice this on an ML2 that I saw a while back, but I looked through it at night.

I'll post pics in a couple minutes and you all can tell me if it's supposed to be there.

my ML2 does the exact same thing on the 2 highest settings as well, and so does the M68 on my rifle at my unit.

Thank you both.  That's exactly what I needed to hear.

It's kind of funny, but I actually like the "dot" in my clonepoint better.  It is more of a focused, round dot.  Plus there isn't a halo around it.

You're turning it up way too high.  Keep it lower and the dot will be nice and clear.

+1

I've been a long time Aimpoint user since the '90s and my M2 is the same way as my older Aimpoint models.

The big difference between the clone point and the Aimpoint is that you never know when the clone point is going to quit working (I have a Tacpoint also).

If you ever get NV gear later on, the M2 is ready to go.

The two reasons I bought the Aimpoint M2.

My biggest problem is that the dot doesn't seem bright enough in the sun unless it is on the highest setting.  Maybe the battery is weak?  And it seems as though the dot in the Aimpoint is almost 1/3 smaller than on the clonepoint.  That could be why I want to crank up the M2.

Adjust the brightness setting to surrounding light conditions correctly and you'll be fine. Using the highest setting in a dark room will give you that effect. Go outside on a sunny day with snow and the highest setting becomes perfectly suited.
