Kind of a dupe thread of one I put in the AK section but I figured it may get answered more quickly here being that aimpoints are common in the AR world.

I plan to run irons on my rifle for awhile (Arsenal SLR107) but want a red dot at some point, I've narrowed it to either an Aimpoint Pro (which I'm also thinking about on my AR middy) or a micro of some kind, what are the pros and cons of each type?

Very little experience with red dot sights and no knowledge of micros whatsoever, I've just seen a lot of them lately so I thought maybe there's something to them.

I'm thinking an RS mount if it matters.

Any opinions are appreciated.

Same shit, one is lighter, less bulky, one is cheaper, one is NV capable(who cares, we use lasers with nvg anyways)

I sold all my big aimpoints and switched to micros.

For an AK, I would go Trijicon RMR

simply put, the micro is lighter and has a battery life of 5yrs while the PRO has a battery life of 3yrs.....and for that you'll pay $200 more than the PRO.

A LOT lighter, and much less bulky.  Worth the $200 difference IMHO.

For an already heavy AK, the micro for sure.  Have you considered an Ultimak rail or MI dedicated front end?  It will allow the micro to co-witness irons and either will also give you a place to mount a light as a bonus.

I have used an Ultimak on an AK while working overseas, so I can vouch for it.  If I had an AK now, I'd get the MI extended handguard with built in micro mount, looks like the best mousetrap. http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=449

I'm sure the setup works very well but I kind of want to keep a traditional look about it, never liked railed forearms much.

What kind of micro dots are there in competition with the aimpoints?

Leupold Delta point is a viable good quality option.  Primary Arms has a micro-not comparable in ruggedness and battery life, but good for range use.

If you don't care about NV-compatibility or the black finish, you can try to find an R-1. They've been discontinued for a few years, so you'll probably have to look in the EE for a used one.
