Trying to sight in my S&W MP-15 that I have an Aimpoint Pro strapped to. I'm at home, so I've pulled the bolt and am looking through the barrel to get lined up and everything. Now that I've got the barrel on my target, I turn the adjustment knobs on the optic, however I can't get the dot to move in any direction. Anyone else had this issue or have an idea of what I'm doing wrong? I feel like an idiot just for asking but for the life of me I can't figure it out.

How far away is your target? The adjustments are small, 1/2'' at 100 yards. If you're doing this at 10 yards you're not going to see any changes until you're at one extreme or the other. You're not going to "see" the dot move. Rather than try to bore sight it, I would have just shot at 25 yards to see if you're on paper then move out to 50 and adjust as necessary... that's just me though. They're generally pretty close at mechanical zero.

That's the issue. I was on paper at the range at 25 yards, but couldn't get anywhere close to zeroed. Now that I've screwed with the windage and elevation so much I have no idea what mechanical zero is.

go to the extremes count the clicks to the other extreme and divide by 2

+1. It sucks. I did it recently on my PRO. Don't remember how many clicks it was, pretty sure it was in the 300s though.

Go all the way to one side, count every single click to the other side, then go back half that number and you'll be dead center.

When you say you were on paper at 25, what do you mean you couldn't get it zerod? Were you shooting off hand or from a bench/prone? The windage/elevation on the PRO is directing the strike of the bullet.

Well this is gonna be fun, perks of working at home I guess though. Gonna get paid to get it back to mechanical zero. I was on paper at 25, but was nowhere near where I was holding. I was shooting on a bench using sandbags and was approximately 5-7 inches high and left. Stupid me grabbed a quarter and just started cranking. It's my own fault but I'm glad to hear that it's not the optic that is messed up.

Use a laser bore sight... its a hell of a lot quicker than counting clicks. Amazon prime one. Read this thread.

Then Watch this video.

Then use these calibration targets for aimpoints/eotechs and similar :)

Enjoy ringing steel at 225!

I was considering the laser bore sight option, they all just have such awful reviews on Amazon.

20 rounds at .50 cents a round is $10 worth of ammo. (The cost of a LBS).

But not hitting paper at 25 yards is even more frustrating in your specific case.

No its not a perfect tool, but it worked pretty damn good.
Take it from someone who recently did the count the clicks method and was in your same shoes not too long ago with my 512.

LBS is fool proof. It also helps build a better understanding of POAim and POImpact

That's a good point. Though thankfully I'm not at $0.50/round. I think I actually got it set up pretty decent now by looking through the bore and such. But I'll probably end up grabbing a LBS just to make things easier in the future.
