Aimpoint with 3x magnifier OR Acog with offset Aimpoint? Putting this on an 11.5'' AR.
If I go the second route I'm thinking an ACOG TA33. Advantages? Disadvantages? Discuss. |

I have been thinking about this as well OP. In my mind the ACOG will have the better reticle/glass, but then your primary is 4x. With the Aimpoint and magnifier your primary will be 1x which is what I find myself shooting the most under 100 yards. The ACOG will take more training to get good with from 3-50 yards, and requires a consistent cheek weld. Then again the magnifier will also take some training to get good with from 2-600. I am leaning toward the Aimpoint/magnifier since I dont shoot over 300 and dont need a BDC reticle for that distance with a 50 yard zero. |

I have also been debating this question with myself. However, I already have both of my AR's outfitted with Aimpoints and it would make more sense to go with magnifiers rather than lose the Aimpoints and go with ACOG's.
I love the Aimpoints and can't see myself getting rid of them. Every time I consider replacing the Aimpoints with magnified optics I always come back to keeping the Aimpoints. The cost of ACOG's has kept me away from them mostly, but there's also the illuminated variable 1-4x24mm or 1-6x24mm scopes that I end up looking at also. But again, I always consider the eye-relief and field-of-view issues with traditional scopes that the Aimpoints don't suffer from. I believe the Red Dot is more than adequate for 85-90% of any uses and I'd be best served by going with magnifiers for those few situations where I'd need the magnification. The cost of Aimpoint or EoTech magnifiers is prohibitive, so I've been researching the Vortex and Primary Arms magnifiers for a cheaper alternative. |

I have some time with a 1-4 and I wasn't impressed because I was spoiled with the true 1x that an aimpoint provided. I do like aimpoints.
There's also the consideration that If you're going to go acog at say ~$1000 I can instead pick up an IOR 2.5-10x42 FFP scope for something like $1100-$1200. It's difficult to justify an ACOG at the price when a very high quality scope can be had at near the same cost which could be dialed down in magnification to about ACOG mag and then back up for some more precise shooting. The IOR would look silly on the 11.5'' but that's not what I think I'd end up putting it on. Christ, decisions decisions. |
| Pretty much on anything under 14.5 id go with a 1x reddot, aimpoints being my choice, for several reasons, but mainly anything shorter than 14.5 for me would be a 300 meter and in weapon, and really an inside 100 yard weapon, making the magnifier even uneccesary. The magnifier can help u at the range determine the accuracy of yer rifle/ammo as well as getting the rifle zeroed, but after that id wamt weapon fast and light as possible, even with flip to side mount I just preferred leaving ot off. |

For an 11.5" gun, I'd stick with just the Aimpoint T1 (you'll have a super-light gun that is super fast to 75Y...throw an Aimpoint or PA LER 3X behind it for anything past that.
The ACOGs are nice, but I think they belong more on 14.5+ inch guns, and in areas that have many places where you can see 300-500Ys (or if you just have a bad astigmatism and don't shoot much inside of 50Y...which would seem odd for an 11.5" gun). |

I don't care for red dots on any sort of rifle to be honest.
Im currently using an elcan on a 10.5 and its awesome. Red dots just don't do it for me. I like having a bit of magnification on a rifle, even if its a SBR. The elcan gives me the best of both worlds really. Basically a red dot with magnification when needed and a BDC |
