I'm finishing my first AR build this week, been taking my time, and in the process of looking for back up iron sights for my flat-top rra upper. Its 16' and has iron front sights. I really like the look of the aimpoint but Ive built this ar cheap and am not interested in the price tag, is there anything generic i could look into? i see knock offs on ebay for $60, but i would like to here some more educated opinions. Any input on backup sights and/or aimpoint would be appreciated

All I can say is that the old saying "you get what you pay for" rings more true for optics than anything else I have ever bought.  I started out with cheap optics and beat my head for years on why I couldn't get guns to shoot right.  Well now, after buying good quality optics for guns that before I though wouldn't shoot worth a damn, I understand why good optics cost what they do.  If you want to hit what you're shooting at, then buy Eotech, Aimpoint, Leupold, Trijicon, etc...  If you don't want to hit what you're shooting at, and be plagued with constant POI shift, then buy cheap junk.  IMHO, Bushnell is cheap junk as well (possible exception being the elite 3200, 4200 series).

I have guns that cost me less than the optics that I have on them, and now they shoot like "million dollar babies".

i started off with a clone type made by Sightmark.  I forgot the name but i think its their tactical red dot for about $80.  i shot it a few times, it worked great and held zero, comes with a mount.  pretty nice, but the mount wont cowitness.

i did the whole fake point thing when I first got my ar's. I grown to believe that is what to expect from a dot sight quality, accuracy, realiability. I ended up just using BUIS ignorantly for years. Then came AIMPOINT. something about having a sight thats been massly used for more than a decade in the sandbox and has the sharp image.  I'm unemployed, married, full time student. If I can save, you can too. Worth $388

Listen to these people.
I repair these sights for a living. YOU CANNOT GET THE KNOCK-OFF SIGHTS FIXED IF SOMTHING GOES WRONG WITH IT. If you break it, drop it or what ever, you are shit out of luck. A quality optic from a big name can be fixed.

Does that include the Holosight, made in the same factory with the same basic guts as the EOTech 511/512 series?  Even if so, too late for me, since I've already got one, but I'm curious....

No idea.  I have only had (and trashed) Bushnell hunting scopes, no red dots.  I actually have a 3200 on my M1A, which is why I stated those were an exception, but even it has problems.  In general I have become more picky with my scope choices as I get older...
