can you describe this step please? I'm unfamiliar with what is going on in this pic. http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn38/rccox/Guns/Patriot%20Brown%20FDE/BF581CDE-8433-4730-AEA2-DAB066BC0564.jpg I am truing up the upper receiver. |

Who makes this? I'm guessing it's a muzzle brake. Is it supplied engraved? http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn38/rccox/Guns/Patriot%20Brown%20FDE/875C8188-B227-4EEF-8C9D-8841934CA27E.jpg Noveske. http://www.primaryarms.com/nvkx5-5-8x24/p/nvkx5-5-8x24/ |

Because vltor uppers are modular? Quoted:

Looks great, what's the deal with the upper having a removable she'll deflector? Because vltor uppers are modular? Technically I believe they are only considered "modular" for changes by the factory, and a user modifying it voids the warranty. Kinda defeats the purpose of being modular in my opinion... I removed my deflector for refinishing like the OP did and just left it off. Looked too goofy when I went to put it back on. |

It's an upper lapping tool. You'll probably need some lapping compound as well. Brownell's carries both.
Read up on it before you do it. It isn't hard or necessarily risky, but you are removing material, so make sure you know what you're doing. Quoted:

Nice build, as always. Question - did you lap the upper before you ceracoated or just after? Just wondering what your steps were with ceracoating involved vs. what would be done with a plain anodized upper. I'm considering buying the tool and compound for my next project, so I am looking to learn as much as I can beforehand. |

If I cerakoting then I lap after the Cerakote. |

Looks awesome. How does patriot brown compare to a ~70/30 mix of burnt bronze and graphite black? I think I've seen some pictures you've posted on here of dark burnt bronze mixes that I thought looked great.
What bolt catch and mag release did you use? What panels are on your handguard? |

The mag release and bolt release are Seekins. The rails covers are Noveske NSR covers. |

Barrel cut to 13.7"? Damn nice build! Just a little longer than that. It is probably closer to 14" becasue I wanted all of the pig to stick out from under the rail. Thanks! I'm planning on doing something more or less like this, but with a PRI tube and the pig hidden as much as possible...now getting the scratch together for a 15" PRI tube and a decent .223 WYLDE barrel THEN sending it off to adco...that's the problem. Oh...and patience..I have none! |

It doesn't remove anything inside the upper. Most custom builders sell their guaranteed rifles without doing the procedure - it's an extra cost option. Because they get good uppers with square noses and don't have to fix a out of specification part. It's the rare upper out of spec that needs it to get the windage/elevation centered up off the extremes and you have to shoot it to zero to discover it. For the most part using my tool I find it barely removes the anodizing on one side enough to get to square - depending on the amount of slack inside the upper. A loose one can be tilted slightly in use. Goes to most people not needing the extra step and having their builds shoot just fine. All it can do is center up the windage/elevation on a gun known to be dialed over too far. |
