I've got a 14.5" DPMS chrome lined 1/9 5.56 barrel that had a front sight tower with no bayo lug.  It was a post ban type and I got it cheap.  I wanted to put this barrel on my upper and put the CAR back together the way it used to be, but I couldn't get the FSB off of that damn barrel.  I ended up chopping it off with a dremel- there was no bayo lug and it was pissing me off from the get-go.  The problem is now I realize that the FSB I chopped off is probably the only one that would fit with that particular barrel due to the way holes and pins are inserted into the FSB and barrel at the factory.

Would a clamp on gas block be a good way to solve this dilemma quickly?  I figure it would cover the existing slots and I wouldn't have to drill new ones.

Any ideas?  pics, suggestions?

Yeah, a clamp on would take care of the situation quickly.  The Armalite model allows the option of using their bayonet lug attachment doohicky.

so, that's something DPMS carries?  What is the length of that barrel, if you happen to know

Those are Armalite products, which will also fit your 0.75" barrel.  Since you have a 14.5" barrel, the lug should be in the correct position for bayonet use.  The pics are probably of rifle and/or midlength barrels though.
