| I've been looking at a lot of different .223 ammo manufacturers and I am wondering which I should avoid all together(besides Tula/Wolf steel cased ammo). I found a combo pack of 540 rds of Wolf Gold + 5 pmags and an ammo can for $250. Is that a good deal right now? Should I avoid Wolf all together? Thanks |

Wolf Gold is good to go. It is brass cased and made in Taiwan. I have seen nothing but good reviews and love the stuff myself. My AR feeds it reliably and it is pretty accurate stuff.
ETA: As far as that being a good deal, you just have to decide for yourself. I have seen just the ammo go for as low as $0.34 a round. If you assume $12 a pop for each mag and the ammo can that is just over $0.35 a round. Not too bad. |

I'm getting the Colt LE6920 and I know I should have no problems with steel cased ammo in it, I was just wondering what manufacturers people tend to stay away from. I was also thinking $250 for the 540rds and pmags was a little high as the site is selling the pmags for $13.95 so x 5 that is $69.75 leaving the ammo and 50cal ammo box costing $180. But I have seen worse prices as well. The same site also has a package deal for 560rds of wolf gold with 3 troy battlemags and the 50cal ammo can for $240. |

I would not necessarily avoid Wolf altogether. The Gold shoots fine for me and is reasonably priced.
I have also had no problems with the limited amount of Wolf Polyformance I have shoot. As a range round it did fine for me, but it is not my top choice due to the lower power and the fact that it requires more time to clean the rifle after shooting it. The steel case was not really a concern as I don't reload at this time. |
| I can and will shoot anything brass cased including Wolf gold. That is the only Wolf worth a damned. As for getting a new rifle just so you can shoot steel cased ammo...AR's were not designed around a steel case like an AK was. Steel cases are hard on extractors too. Whoever advised you to sell your rifle and get one that will shoot steel cased ammo is a bit off. There is a reason why people have so much trouble with it and why many manufacturers include warnings in the literature that comes with a new rifle. Your life, your money, your choice... |
| Maybe I'm wrong, unless your shooting for precision ammo is ammo, also if your not shooting suppressed. In the military I was always under the impression a clean gun and good fundamentals are what will make a difference. Not higher or lower grain bullets. This is just strictly a combat rifle I'm talking about too. |

If my rifle doesn't work with Ram Line magazines, should I get a new rifle that will? If a UTG hand guard won't fit on my rifle, should I get a new rifle? Why would you make a commitment to a low quality product, and shun potentially an excellent rifle that does not like steel ammo? If your rifle will shoot steel cased ammo, and you are fine with shooting steel cased ammo, then do it. If your rifle is not reliable with steel cased ammo, buy brass cased ammo, or start reloading to get cheap ammo. |

I almost only ever shoot steel ammo in my M&P 15 Sport, almost exclusively Tulammo; the only brass I buy is dirt cheap reloads from LAX ammo (local) or 5.56 for my rainy day stash. Not one issue, even mixed mags of steel and brass reloads TRYING to induce a failure with a dirty gun in run-n-gun in desert conditions. Any half-ass, half-decent AR should cycle steel ammo 100%. Also, forget what the brass snobs say; run steel all day long unless its a match competition rifle. You get more trigger time, more ammo for the cost, and more training and/or fun. Absolutely worth it imho. |
