I have been reading posts about finishing 80% lowers, especially Doug's excellent website. Most references I have read mention using a jig. Is there any other way to locate the holes to drill, like blueprints? I have access to a mill that has a digital locating device that allows return to zero within .001", or at least that is the best I can describe it. If I can find good prints that give the locations and dimensions I should be able to do without the jig. Also, do the Les Baeur broached lower forgings require much more work than an 80% casting? They are about the same price. Thanks, Jim |

pepperbelly yes the 80% can be finished without a jig so can a 0% check the old threads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is a set a free plans available on this site!!!!!!!!!!! if not go to roderuscustom.com, if you can't find them there????????????????? but if your to lazy to check, I will sell you a set how is about $50.00 sprat |

I found some plans, but am not sure which I need. Some of the plans are in cad format and difficult to read at my computer's resolution. I was wondering if the blueprints sold by the Tannery shop were the answer? $50.00? Well, bring 'em over and I'll look at 'em. Jim |

pepperbelly; The plans sold by Tanneryshop are the same identical plans as the ones posted over on biggerhammer.net and which are also posted over on old.ar15.com in PDF format. old.ar15.com/docs/lowerBlueprint.pdf These are all copies of the same drawing by Duke Snider that almost everyone out there is working off of. HTH . . . . Doug |

Thanks Doug. When I viewed the page on your link I found that I had already viewed it on the acrobat reader. Do documents automatically save with Adobe Acrobat? I couldn't find a save button. I have to figure out how to print it and let my dad see it to see if it can be done with his mill. I guess if I can't print it well I may give Tannery shop $5.00 to do it for me. I may have to drive up to Wichita Falls if I get in trouble. Thanks, Jim |
If you have access to a mill I'd recommend a 0% or one of the Les Baer forgings. Check out www.roderuscustom.tzo.com. |

My dad has a mill, a Bridgeport type mill I think. I was considering an 80% until I saw the Les Baeur broached forging. The main reason I am shy about a 0% lower is that I haven't ran the mill and it looks like a lot of close tolerance work that would be easy to screw up. Thanks, Jim |

If you haven't already, read the AR-15 section on roderuscustom and see if it looks like something you can handle. But if you dad owns a mill, I'm sure he can teach you enough to do it. Also keep in mind that you can buy 3-4 0% forgings for what an 80% casting would cost. So even if you screw one up you're still ahead on money and the finished product will be better. |
