| Running an AR45 lower with a standard carbine buttstock/buffer, using surplus m3 mags and an Oly upper. First 3 mags fired with only 2 failures to extract/clear the ejection port using Blazer 230gr RN ammo. I've fired almost an entire case of this Blazer ammo through various Government Models without noticing any unusual fouling problems. However after firing only 90 rds through the AR45 I noticed unusually heavy carbon fouling blown back into the receiver and with each firing a great deal of smoke would waft upward out of the action. None of the fired cases appeared to exhibit any signs of premature opening but just wondering if using a heavier Hahn buffer, I have on hand, wouldn't hold the action closed just a little longer. Are there any down sides to using the heavier buffer besides the potential for short stroking? |
| The heavier Hahn buffer would tend to hold the bolt closed a little longer. Proper operation on a blow back is a juggling act & could cause problems if you're running lighter loads. If it helps I've got a Hahn buffer & Wolff spring for my AR45. If & when I ever get the lower receiver back from Kahlan. |

I am using a Spikes Tacitcla ST-9X buffer (8.5 oz), a Wolff Heavy Spring and a ARFX-E stock and having great results, but Brass is slightly dirty. I was using a Standard Rifle buffer and spring. Function was fine, but brass came out looking like dirty charcoal. Oh yeah, this is all on the AR-45 with Oly uppper. One thing to note with the ST-9X, the AR-45 functions great, but you can not use the BHO to hold the bolt open. You would have to remove about 1/4" from the rear of the buffer and move the bounce pad hole to use the hold open. I have been so happy with it, I just don't use the Bolt Hold open, I use a safety flag instead. And my expierence on my 9mm and 45 ACP Oly uppers is the BHO is marginally functional anyway. A good shaking knocks it loose anyway. ~Dan ETA: I am using this with a 6" Barrel |
I talked to him about this. He recommended the ST-X based on the BHO issue above, but they don't have a 45 ACP platform to try it out on. I purchased the ST-x & the ST-9X and tried both. I stuck with the ST-9X in the 45 and am using the ST-X in a 9mm, but I will probably switch to the ST-9X in the 9mm systems also. |
If you get me the exact amount needed to come off the ST-9X, Ill make an ST-45X. |
