I have a Roggio Arsenal stripped lower with a DPMS lower parts kit that I assembled & having a problem. If I insert a GI type magazine, it goes in and locks fine, but if I try to use a MagPul one, I have trouble getting it to lock in. If I really slam the MagPul mag in, I can get it to lock in place, but not reliably enough to be able to depend on the gun. I have tried adjusting the mag release in and out(loosening and tightening) with no luck. If I slide the mag catch out of the way, it looks like the detent on the magazine lines up pretty well with the hole the mag catch goes through when inserted. One thing I notice is the bolt release starts to push down on the magazine follower as the magazine is fully inserted. Any suggestions on a remedy for this? I know these Roggio lowers aren't known for always being 100% in spec. Not sure if it is an out of spec issue or possibly something else.

Empty or full magazine hard to seat?
Empty: (no rounds) Take the upper receiver off of the lower receiver. Seat the magazines in the lower receiver and check to see if they lock in place and drop free when you release them. Attach the upper to the lower receiver, run the bolt forward and repeat the test. Full magazine: (loaded to full capacity) Download 30 round magazines to only 28 rounds and try again. Some magazines in some rifles do not have enough wiggle room to fully seat when loaded to capacity. They press up against the bottom of the bolt carrier and there is not enough room for the magazine spring to further compress. Downloading the magazine allows some extra room for the magazine to fit into the rifle. I should note, PMags are made slightly longer than USGI magazines to allow you to fully load to capacity without the need to download. If the above isn't working, try replacing the magazine catch. Try again. If that doesn't work, the receiver may have issues. magazine release machined too high/close to the upper. |

Pull the follower out of the mag,and try again with the bolt closed,
The only thing that I can think of is that the mag lips are maxing out on the bottom of the carrier, and causing the problem. If it is not that, then take a look up through the front of the mag well from the lower receiver to the upper receiver front mag well edges, hence to see if the upper receiver mag front wall well edge is proud of the lower front well wall, and what is causing the bind instead. |
| So I've tried all the suggestions with no luck. Aluminum GI type magazines work perfectly, but the Magpul's still don't lock in consistently. If I really whack it in, it will lock in with the Magpuls(I've tried several with same outcome) but they don't lock like they should normally. When I remove the mag catch and insert the mag, the detent in the Magpul mags looks like it might be a hair short of lining up normally to lock in. So, I suspect the machining of the mag catch hole on the lower is just a bit out of spec. (I know I shouldn't be surprised considering the brand of the lower lol). So know I guess my question is, can this be fixed? If so, how? This was just a spare lower I picked up really cheap, but it would be nice if I can get it to work reliably with Magpul mags. Worst case senario, I guess I will just have to use only aluminum mags with it. |
