Can you take the barrel nut off with a healthy strap wrench to change handguard?

You will prolly be able to get more torque on it using a barrel wrench & a cheater bar, if needed, than you will with a strap wrench.

I would just get a good barrel wrench, you know this is not the last time you will need one

You can get them for around $15 at MidwayUSA for a USGI style wrench, but I just splurged and got the PRI wrench for aroung $30 a few weeks ago and love it, its built from 3/8" plate steel and looks like I will never need another one

Money well spent.  I bought a barrel wrench years ago thinking I'd only

use it once.  Yeah, right.
