I was originally planning to build a .308 compatible AR-15 with the plans to be able to swap out uppers between .308 and .223/5.56.  Since then, I've read that an AR-10 type lower would be required for the .308.

I'm all about multi-purposing, so with that said, what calibers COULD I use in an AR-15?

Also, what in the world is the difference between all the lowers that different companies have?  There's such a price difference between them all.  I'm leaning toward buying a lower from a local company just for ease of sale, but their price for a lower is roughly $100 higher than others I've seen.  Is it worth the convenience?  I don't know.

I have to say, in planning out this build, I'm blown away by the vast number of companies that make parts.  What really discerns one from another?

Well son of a gun (no pun intended). I had looked for something like that, but obviously wasn't looking in the right places.  Thanks.
