When I was at Ft. Knox in '84 or '85, US Cavalry sold a mount that fit inside the carry handle of an AR15 or M16 (an A1 carry handle).  The mount clamped inside the carry handle and had rings on the right side of the carry handle.  That way, you could cant the weapon to access the magnified optic (with a decent cheek weld) or use the iron signts without peeking through the hole in a typical mount.  I don't recall what it was called.  Seems like it might be a cool accessory for a KISS rifle, if you could fine one.

Hmm. Never seen one, but it sounds like a cool concept. Tag for more info.

Yup, still have one in the safe somewhere.  I used it before the flattops came on the scene, it was the best way to put optics on an A2 back in the old days.  I'll dig it out and post pics, if anyone is interested.

Okay, here you go:

I can't find the documentation, and there are no markings on the unit, so I have no idea who made it.  I remember a friend of mine who was at Ft Bragg in 1991 had one of these, he loved it so I ordered one.  I worked great, as noted earlier it was a bit awkward at first but you figured it out fast.

The side plate comes off, you slide it under the carry handle (hench the small scrapes), replace and tighten the four screws.    There is also a screw underneath that goes through the hole in the carry handle itself, so the unit is locked on to the rifle solidly.  The mount base itself has 2 pairs of holes, so the mount can be moved in, out, or angled, depending on the desired cheek weld.  Yes, I know it looks ugly, it's been in an ammo can of misc. parts in the back of my safe for years, it's mostly just grime, too lazy to clean the thing.  Don't really need it anymore, I don't shoot A2's anymore.

I knew ARFCOM would come through!  Thanks Wayne

Yours is not quite what I recall, but that may say more about my memory than any dissimilarity between your mount and the one I saw.    I thought the rail was/rings were on the side of the right hand plate (i.e. mounted perpendicular to the carry handle) but I'm probably wrong.  It's been 25 years.

No sweat.  I seem to keep all my old parts from way back when, I guess you never know when you might need it again.  I still have some stuff in an L.L. Baston box!

Nope.  WayneG's is closer to what I remember.  It was probably a civilian aftermarket component, since US Cav was selling it in their Catalog and Elizabethtown KY store.

Basically, it was two plates machined to fit the contours inside the carry handle.  The main difference between what I recall seeing and WayneG's is I thought the rings were attached directly to the right hand plate (so the scope would be at about 1 o'clock when using the iron sights and at 12 o'clock when the weapon was canted)

WayneG's mount––or an earlier version of it––is probably what I saw.

If anyone still cares about this thread, I did finally locate the original box for this, manufacturer was Terrill Technologies, Inc out of Atlanta.  I did a seach and found the Patent data on it, which has detailed drawings of this in PDF format.  Enjoy.

ETA the inventor is Rufus Terrill, who apparently ran for Mayor in Atlanta and has a Attack Robot in his bar.
