Check out the specs on this scope, and the price: http://www.opticsplanet.net/tasco-10-40x50-targetvarmint.html What would be wrong with putting this on my target shooting AR-15? Do lower cost scopes not put rounds on target? Thanks for any replies. |

I've found that less experienced shooters are frustrated by ultra high magnification scopes. The reason is, everything is magnified. Your natural wobble, shake caused by a breeze, your pulse, on and on. You'll end up chasing the crosshairs all over the target. Also in the cheaper scopes, pretty much any magnification above 12X is going to be very milky looking. |

I know what you mean. Don't try to zoom your way to the bullseye either. |
What is your pain point with regards to a scope purchase? In other words, how much do YOU think a variable scope with fully multicoated glass lenses, that is fogproof, shockproof, waterproof, has reliable 1/4 or 1/8 click adjustments (your choice), and is parallax adjustable cost? I will tell you that, IMO, the Bushnell 6500 series are very nice, but I do not think that you want to pay that much, or more, for a scope. If you want a nice scope for target shooting, that looks kinda tacticool, with its mid-dot reticule, consider the fixed 10 power Bushnell 3200. I think that the glass is better than the Super Sniper scope many people seem to like. Lastly, support the dealers who support this site! |
That Bush 6500 looks nice but for that money I may as well get a Nik or a Leup |
IMO, Leupy's are nice, but not worth the $$ they charge. I have a few Monarch's (Gold and UCC). They're ok, but I think the 6500 is better. In the end it is your money and your choice. |

Generally, the best advice is to spend as much, or more, on your scope as you did on the rifle. I only use my AR for benchrest shooting at 100yds or more so put a Nightforce Benchrest Scope on it. After the initial price pain I am very happy I did. By the way, you can always move the scope to your next rifle as you move up in capability. Think of a good scope as an investment. |
That is really funny. Take a look at their website and judge for yourself. Many serious benchrest shooters have the Nightforce and consider it one of the best you can buy. http://www.nightforceoptics.com/ABOUT_US/about_us.html Added: Try this web site for some very good information on rifle optics. The "Optics FAQ's" link has information on choosing expensive as well as cost effective optics. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=19&page=1 |
If you want to look at 44mm obj scopes that look A LOT like the old 44mag's, from Simmons, pre Meade, look at the Intensity line of scopes from ATK. Also now that ATK has reaquired Weaver Optics from Meade, I wonder if they will try and save that brand? Lastly, I'm hopeful that Leupold, with its purchase of Redfield, will let Redfield be the "value" line in Leupold, ie no more Lupy Rifleman's |
Thanks for that bit 'o humor this morning. ![]() About the only thing I can say bad about Nightforce is that, IMO, they charge near 5 star prices for 3 star glass. Not sure if this is 'bad' necessarily. Very good scopes, though. |

I did about 2 months worth of research on scopes in the sub $300 range and am very pleased with my choice, see why bottom line, i'm recommending Burris FF-II 3-9x40 w/ BDC, $195 w/ a set of 8x binocs. |
You should have compared the 4200 on 9x or 10x, instead of 24x. No doubt I was one of the ones telling you to pick the 3200 over the Burris. That said, if you like a bullet drop reticule, in your price range I think you have a good scope. Such a deal I tell you! |
My CMP rifle does not normally have a scope on it, though I did put a Monarch UCC 3.3-10 on it for load work up. Shoots better than I can hold... My wife's M4gery is topped with a M2. She likes the dot and the fact it is always on. My A-1 upper Mid-Length is topped with a Burris XTS in an Aimpoint C/H mount. From time to time, I have topped it with a 4x Burris Mini or 3x TA502. |
