I bought a new Olympic AR last week and when I tried to clean the barrel I found that it was full of black crap...took it back to the dealer and ordered a Bushmaster...now I am reading here that some people are having problems with their Bushmasters.....

So did I make a bad choice in choosing the Bushmaster??  Several years ago they were considered top of the line...

Has their quality gone to pot or are there so many more of them out there that the inevitable number of manufacturing defects is catching up with them....???

Well I HAD one and had to send it back to fix the canted FSB, I know another guy who has one and also sent it in for something else (forgot what), I would spend a little more on an LMT personally.  That said, I don't think they're bad guns, just not the finest AR on the market.

I bought the basic A3 model with the idea of getting a varmint style upper later.  What I have been reading here seems to indicate that there are a lot more problems with the uppers than the lowers.  Is that what you folks are seeing???

If the lower is OK, I could sell the upper and add a varmint upper but if there are problems with both, I may just sell the rifle and get something else....the reason I would consider selling and starting over is that dealer gave me a very good discount on the Bushmaster because I buy lots of stuff from him and the problem I had with the Olympic rifle..

holy shit! i just posted this in another AR dimension but it fits here too......

to the op, keep the Bushmaster, shoot it and love it.

sure it may seem like Bushy has "a lot" of defects but let's put this in perspective............it's an internet gun site.

in 2005 Bushy put out just over 65,000 rifles. the next closest AR manufacturer was DPMS with just under 22,000. from there it spirals down very quickly, making most other AR manufacturers seem like custom shops. now with that level of production how do things stack up? i wonder what the FAIL % rate is at some of these places?

edit: made it hot
gun stats

Bushmaster is a good company with top quality customer service. sure you may need to re-do the gas key but most of us here shoot more than the average guy (well i do) and he'll never know that it's not done properly so what's the big deal. of all of the Bushy rifles i've sold (gun shop) and own i only know of 1 that has had any malfunction. the sight post was canted, that was a quick and easy fix. we had it back in a week with a NEW barrel. even the highly respected LMT has put out some canted FSB's.

to me it's kinda like this.....you are not going to take a factory stock truck (insert your brand) and win the Baja 1000. so why do you expect to buy a factory stock rifle and win a 1000yd competition?

colt = lowest bid with production capability that's all it is! it's a government contract, nothing more. if any other company would have "won" the contract then their rifles would be made to "exact" mil spec. (well the ones for the mil/leo)

The only problem I had with my 4 Bushmasters is that they looked purple under 100 watt bulbs when there was a full moon. Better make sure you have the M4 feed ramps.

You will be fine. Even if you do have a problem Bushmaster is great at fixing the issue fast.

Bushmaster does have excellent customer service, too bad they only have a 1 year warranty though.

I've seen several of their rifles have carrier key staking issues - but QUIB has a thread about how to fix it quick, fast, and in a hurry for almost no money (you'll spend much more on shipping).  Other than that, they seem to be fine.

IF you have an issue they have great customer service.

Any problems with mine were self induced by my own stupidity...

Thanks to all who replied...

I feed a lot more confident now....I was hoping the negative posts I read were from the dissatisfied few; not the satisfied many...

I appreciate the time all of you took to answer my questions..

Of the three that I have I only had one issue with my 9mm carbon 15. Sent it back, they tweeked the mag block and it was fixed. They even paid for the shipping both ways. As for my A3 and A2 zero ftf or fte.

I work for a medium sized County Sheriff's Office and all of us in the patrol division are issued a Bushmaster Patrolman's Carbine in the M4A3 configuration. We've had the rifles a bit over a year and I have heard of zero issues with any of them whether on the range or in the field.

I liked mine so much, that I went to the same police supply store that my agency purchased the rifles from, and bought the exact same model for my own personal use. It is my go-to gun, and I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

My guess is that either some of the internet folks like to stretch the truth a bit... Or, they put a lot more rounds down range than those of us who get free ammo to use through our employers. I spend a lot of time on the range (as would any gun-nut that doesn't pay for the ammo out of pocket), so I can only imagine that those folks must live behind the trigger, or shoot competitively for a living.

At any rate... I feel that Bushmaster is good to go. I trust my life to mine daily both at home and at work. I'm sure you will be pleased with your decision.

I also have a Bushmaster Patrolman's carbine. I mostly use mine for coyote hunting or jsut to show off to some friends and have never had any problems with it. One day it did keep jamming but one squirt of rem oil and it hasn't had any problems in four months.

I am considering buying the predator upper for a better predator hunting rifle. Anyone have a better suggestion for an avid coyote hunter in the midwest!?
