Hi, I purchased a RRA AR-15 in 9mm and had it transferred to VA where I live...Went to pick it up tonite and had two surprises...neither good.  First off, since carbine comes with a 25 round magazine, I need 3 IDs to pick it up! My Mil ID, Drivers license and CCW permit not enough ("Assault weapon requires US citizenship proof I guess)...that I can deal with...as I was completing the forms however the store's staff opened the Blue Shipping Case (apparently still factory sealed at one end...had a lot of RRA looking stuff printed on it) and at the end of the case next to me, I noticed a broken peice of black plastic packing material...That is not what it was...it was the shell deflector!  Ouch!  I guess I own it, but I sure was dissapointed that the gun came broken.....only 9mm AR I have seen seemed sturdier...anyway gun is at store awaiting me to return with my passport to pick it up...that said, are y'all's carbines sturdy?  Is the shell defelector plastic?  To be honest, the broken part in the case looked wimper than stuff on my vacuum cleaner?  I may have learned an expensive valuable lesson today.

The shell deflector isn't hard to take off or put on, but you should contact the dealer you bought it from to have this dealt with.  You paid for a complete gun, you should get it.

My RRA 9mm is solid as a rock (just wait until you start trying to put it together-they make 'em very tight on purpose and you'll need some "resolute action" to get the upper and lower mated the first time.  The deflector is plastic, but it's not flimsy either.  I'm guessing that something happened during shipment, so look for damage to the case.

Damn shame that a GI can't purchase a rifle in the U.S. without a lot of hassle.  Kinda accentuates my feelings for my home state-none of that sort of nonsense here in Texas.  The only time I ever had even a slight hassle buying a gun while on active duty was when I was assigned to a base in Mississippi but still had a Texas drivers' license.  I just had to bring a utility bill to the dealer to show that I was actually "residing" in MS at the time.  Sounds like Virginia needs to get its collective priorities straight...

GH: Thanks for the answer...and for your service...Hopefully this will work out...I paid for this in December, and it just arrived...so, that sort of adds to the dissapointment...I was debating whether to get a 9mm or 7.62x39....never bought a rifle on the net, but this site has such good gouge, I felt like it ought to be doable...have to wait and see...I sent an email to the guy I bought it from, he seems like a straight shooter, and I posted a note in the RRA industry section, have to wait and see what RRA thinks...Ya, usually VA gets it right...this struck me as odd...tx again! v.r W

The citizenship requirement in VA actually stemmed from when that asshole Mir Amal Kamzi bought a semi-auto AK and shot those employees in front of the CIA back in the early 90's. He was in the US illegally. The VA legislature made it so you had to prove you were a citizen to buy an AW. Not all rifles, just AW's with "evil features". Of course, it was a moot point during the 10 year AW ban since you couldn't buy them anyway, but since the ban expired, alot of people don't know about it. It's not a federal thing, just a VA thing.

That's why I always have my voter ID card in my wallet, just in case something jumps off the rack at me and says "buy me".

Acceptable forms of citizenship proof in VA are passport, voter ID card, certified copy of birth cert, and/or copy of selective service registration ( but who the hell has that one?).

Military officers must be a US Citizen, but enlisted guys don't have to be, that's why a .mil ID isn't acceptable for this, also VA CHP's can be issued to resident and non-res aliens (as long as you're here legally).

Most solid AR I have owned, no need for any accu-wedge. VERY tight well matched upper and lower.
