I'm still new to the AR world, but I did pick up a new S&W MP15 today at a gun show. It has the flat top rear (no sight), but the front sight is still attached...kind of like they forgot to give me the rear detachable carry handle....anyway, I plan on putting on a scope so no loss there, but the front sight will be in the scope view...SO....
1- Can someone post..(and pictures are great if ya' have em') how to REMOVE the front sight? 2- Is there anything specific I need to keep in mind for this job? 3- Are there problems with leaving the front sight off...(empty screw holes in the barrel...different finish underneath....anything?) I appreciate any help I can get from you guys...and thanks in advance! Leafinthewind |

If your using a 4X or better, the front sight tower shouldn't be a problem. You wont have your scope focused at six inches so you'll see right through the front sight.
If you still want it out of the way, another option is to cut the tower itself off. You can clean it up with a Dremel. Just leave the gas block part of it alone. |

Made it hot, n00b. For the OP: That front sight is also your gas block, an essential part of operating your rifle. The way you got your rifle, standard A2 FSB and no rear sight is pretty standard. Just leave it and run your scope, you most likely won't notice it at all and it definitely won't impair your view. Read the stickies and look at the pic threads, you'll see a lot of rifles with the same configuration. |

Wow...good info...and fast too...you guys (gals too?...) ROCK! So I'm continuing my AR education...gas blocks...part of the front sight...It seems common to replace the FSB/gas block with a picatinny rail gas block. I've been doing some net searches..., is there a problem using aluminum gas blocks on the steel barrel...something about heat expansion difference?
