| I'm trying to help a friend find an optics system for his AR, he has an astigmatism and I have no idea how that would affect an aimpoint style red dot or eotech style system. Can anyone help me out with this? |

Can anyone help me out with this? He has his vision corrected right? I have astigmastism and as long as I am wearing my glasses or contacts I have no issues. Without my glasses or contacts I can shoot well enough, but everything is blurry then. Holy shit, when I look through an eotech with my naked eye it is just a field of red stars. |

The problem with astigmatism is that it gets worse when you are tired or fatigued. Glasses can help. But, the degree that your eyes have trouble with the dot changes based on your physical state.
Most people look at their Aimpoint in their living room and make a negative conclusions about the quality of their dot shape. If they would go outside where it matters, the dot will appear far better because their pupils will constrict and let less light in. The dot will appear much better. It doesn't matter what the dot looks like indoors. Distances are short. |
I had a guy at work want to take a look at a red dot type sight for his new rifle. I showed him an aim point ans he looked through it and asked which of the 6 dots he was supposed to use. An eotech was even worse for him so I guess it affects people differently.

| I am in that same boat. Even with glasses the dots on my EOtech and aimpoint are star burst shaped. My son who wears corrective lenses says the dots are sharp and clear. I am in my mid 50s and am not getting any better. I decided to switch to a 1x4 when I find one that will work for me. The advice of trying before you buy is a good one. |

Any optic w/an adjustable focus will help clear astigmatism and make the reticle sharp and clear. If he's looking for a rugged 1x like an Aimpoint or Eotech then he might consider the Leupold Prismatic (w/the DCD reticle) which is very rugged, 1x, has a huge FOV through the optic and has an adjustable focus.
After looking through a Prismatic I must say the reticle can be adjusted to extremely sharp (I have astigmatism and Eotech/Aimpoint reticles are distorted but still usable). A good variable 1-4x will provide the same correction plus magnification if desired but won't be as rugged as the Prismatic in the same price range. HTH... Tomac |

Also you can flip up your BUIS and look through the small hole at the red dot and it should be much sharper. It is what I do when trying to take long shots with my Aimpoint... Works great.. |

Quoted: I noticed the same things. However, I noticed too, when I use the Aimpoint as it should be used - looking at the target, not the dot, things get much better. I found a good way to train people that are new to dot sights is to use the front lens cover to make it like the old OEG. It seems like too many people try to use their red dot sights like a scope.
