Forgive a (probably) newbie question, but why, on the EE, do so many people sell complete uppers minus the bolt and bolt carrier? I thought that these two pieces (upper and bcg) mated together with wear. Why wouldn't someone keep them together? Thanks. |

Because they want to use the bolt/carrier in a new build. This ''''matching wear" thing is true, but kind of overdone by some folks. unless you're talking about a barrel/bolt that have been together for 8-10,000 rounds There simply isn't enough wear in a quality brand bolt lug to keep it from mating up w/a new barrel. Some years back I bought 5 milsurp Colt bolt assys. Based on the marks, they were all Viet Nam era pieces. Headspace checked all of them in 4 different ARs, ranging from my 1976 era Colt SP1 class three piece w/nearly 10,000 rounds thru it, to a nearly new Rock River M4gery. All but one of them wouldn't close on a max headspace gauge, and the "worn" one wouldn't close on a field guage. That piece was so old that it predated the "C" stamping and was simply marked "MP". It also had the early white insert in the extractor spring. Still am using three of the 5 in my ARs, and they're fine. And that's why so many folks sell their uppers w/o the bolt/carriers. |
