I have a colt 6920 and I know alot of you try to have at least one extra bcg per gun.  My question is, do you really need a complete bcg, or would just an extra bolt suffice.  I've only heard of bolts breaking but the only problem I've seen with the carriers is the gas key comes unsrewed if the staking is bad.  Also, I have an extra Stag arms bolt that I bought when I had a stag upper.  The bolt is new, never used.  Is there anything I should do to know that it will work correctly with my 6920?

You should be fine with just the Stag bolt as a spare. If you are really worried about it working put it in your carrier and run a couple of hundred rounds with it, then swap back to your colt bolt.

I agree with having an extra bolt since they all break eventually. I would have said that having a spare bolt carrier was overkill, then I had this happen:

I now keep spare gas carrier keys and spare gas carrier key bolts. BSW

A spare bolt is always good, regardless of manufacturer.  I see no need to have a spare bolt carrier, especially if you have a colt, but I would definitely get a spare carrier key and screws, firing pin, cam pin, and firing pin retainers.

what happened there, it's hard to tell from the photos?  It looks like the carrier key screws came loose, were they properly staked?

Not loose, the forward bolt head fractured and fell off.

Rifle remained shootable afterward. I only found the damage when cleaning that evening. BSW
