About a year ago  I loaned an AR to my Father, its an Bushmaster carbine A2 that had 200 rounds through it if that. My folks came to visit for Thanksgiving and returned the rifle. it turns out that he just never got around to taking it to the range but kept it clean. When I went to put it away I see that the BCG is missing and he could not recall where he may have left it.

Thinking that I should take the opportunity to buy a new BCG, I looked online and saw Bravo Company had a F/A BCG in stock and I ordered one, only to find out that he found the original BCG at home and has mailed it out to me.

Since this original BCG was factory, as well as the whole carbine can my old one serve as a back up and keep the head-space in the upper? I don't own head-space gauges and I'd like to use this brand new BCM BCG instead of the old semi-auto BCG.

Should I check head-space before I use the new one or am I worrying about a non issue?

The safest answer is to headspace it and be absolutely sure.

The other answer is with a functioning rifle and in-spec parts you should be just fine.  If you're really concerned about it, put your "original" bolt in the new carrier and you're practically shooting it as original.

I would keep using the Bushmaster BCG and keep the BCM as a back up in case something happens.

But I would probably build a new rifle around the spare BCG

I would probably contact me to sell that bcm for a steep discount, since clearly u don't need it.

I'm still trying to understand how someone could loan an AR for a year.  I have 3 AR's and if I loaned even one of them I would having separation anxiety before the first day had passed.
